Bond, James Bond
« on: 17 Nov 2006, 16:38 »

So who has seen Casino Royale? I saw it last night an ejoyed but the ending seemed poorly structured. As with most Bond films if you like the rest (or most of them) you'll like this. If you don't like Bond films you wont like this.

My favourite line:
Bond: Martini please
Waiter: Shaken or stirred?
Bond: Does it look like I care?

I saw it at midnight last night (California time). As a person who read the original book, and several other of Ian Fleming's books, I had to say this...

BLOODY BRILLIANT. For the most part matches the mood of the original book. Of course, they had to add a lot of stuff to the movie (like the whole first hour of the film) but they got the mood right.

The Bond of the books was a heartless killer, not a charming womanizer with a vanishing car and other high-tech gadgets. Sean Connery had it right. Timothy Dalton had it right, except fans showed little interest for whatever reason.

Daniel Craig gets it right. Even the memorable last line of the original book (which I won't repeat) gets into the film more or less intact near the end.

My favourite line in every bond film is:

"Hush, man talk!"

Sean connery is the best bond, and Dr No is the best film, although I am yet to see casino royale.

Going tonight! I can't wait, I love the idea of Craig as Bond. Different, but I was never a big fan of Moore.

The movie was AMAZING!!!!. It was somehow action filled and with a great plot and feel. I was truely impressed.

Btw. I went with some freinds and we got about 40 people to dress up in either suits of dresses for the premier, we totally rocked the theather. lol

Can someone plz help me find backgrounds from the beggining sequence, the artsy one. Or a video of the opening. THe card motif blew my mind.

A new favorite Bond movie.  The villain was so much more realistic this time, he wasn't trying for world domination, he was just a banker for terrorists.  No outrageous plots involving satellites and such, just a few bombs and poisons.  And I'm impressed at how they turned the franchise back into a spy flick instead of an action flick like the last three.

I saw it sunday night, it was sold out when I went on opening night so we saw the prestige instead, which was pretty amazing.

Anyways, Craig is awesome. I don't even get what the stupid fuss about him being blonde was. Everything about him was awesome. It's a darker Bond, sure, but it's an excellent bond. We've got ourselves a good-old spy movie again, not end of the world action flick. The characters are characters this time, not just borrowed stereotypes. Pretty much excellent all around.

The scene near the beginning with Sebastien Foucan (fore-runner of free-running/parkour) was pretty awesome. I loved when Craig broke the gyprock after him.

I loved the chair.  I am so glad they didn't put a lazer on a seabass and drop him into the water while haveing his balls smashed.

I agree, they kept the tone of the original book.

Pretty much agree with everything you guys are saying.  People in the theatre were laughing during most of the chair scene, I mean when he starts on that scratching my balls thing it was about the funniest line ever given the situation.

Yeah, that was pretty fuckin' brilliant.

I can't wait for the next one. It's been a long time since I've said that about Bond, but it's true.

Apparently I am the only one who found it entirely dull, and who gives two shits if it was closer to the source material, theres 10-20 movies out there that I woulda say define a legacy more than the original book.  But ignore all that, it was a crappy movie, jumping on current fads like free running and poker.

And it was entirely too predictable, I called every single poker hand shown before they flipped the cards.  Based on the Flop and what I KNEW was going to happen to propel to movie forward in the most by-the-books fashion.

Id give it a D-

I don't know if they played poker or not in the book, but the fact that it was texas hold 'em irritated me, I'm a man for five card draw, myself, and the poker scenes were very dull and predictable.
About the legacy, though, the last few movies have proven that carrying on in that vein is a dead end. Legacy smegacy, here's a new movie which is good and can go about starting a new legacy. I'm all for that. And I can't see how you can knock it for having free-running, sure it may be catching on as a fad right now in some parts of the world, but it made for an undeniably awesome scene.

I thought the Free Running was good dont get me wrong, but for proponents of a more "realistic Bond movie" tapping into fads doesn't lend itself to that arguement very well at all.

And to your legacy schmegacy thoughts, if they are set to change or renew the legacy, have a clean break etc.  Why not just start a new franchise, an original one.  It seems like making it a Bond movie was more about a cross promotion scheme to get the built in Bond movie fanbase to show up, and an action movie to get the action movie crowd to buy tickets.

But ignoring the ideological issues I had with it, it was still a mediocre movie that went on for alot long than I would wish.  It wasnt captivating so I didnt need to waste an extra hour of my life waiting for it to end.  Ive seen other bond movies, hell, other action movies have twice as much happen in almost half as much time, and was much better for it.

In the novel, the game played is baccarrat.

And who knows what the hell that is?

I know how to play baccarat.

It's boring as hell. You cannot devote an hour of a movie to a frickin' high stakes baccarat game.

I think poker worked logically and perfectly.

I think the other Bond films are crap.  The Bond as a character was wooden, sure they gave him one liners, but he never grew, he was unsympathetic, and he was a sloppy spy in every movie after Dr No.  They are like watching the Duke late in carrier "Now listen here pilgrim" with a script tucked into his shirt so he didn't have to practice the lines.

Notice that Connery was the only one to kick his shoes off so that he wouldn't be heard creeping.

Most people don't understand baccarrat, and it is not as exciting as poker. Still, the poker scenes in the movie were pretty much predictable crap. I understand it wasn't a poker movie, but I didn't really like the scenes that much. I also loathed the fact that they played texas hold 'em; I learned on 5 card draw and that's what I like. Sure, you don't have the intrigue and calculation of the flop/river/turn, but it makes for a game based more on betting & bluffing, which is how I like to play.

I don't know a damn thing about poker, so I wasn't able to guess odds and predict what would happen, but I did find the poker scenes a bit dull. I don't know a damn thing about poker, so I had to wait until the characters reacted to see what their cards meant.

I was, however, able to make guesses at what would happen based on the narrative structure.

Still, poker quibbles aside it was an awesome movie. I'm absolutely thrilled that Bond does actual spy work, which is basically like being a detective except that it is illegal in pretty much every country on Earth. And the decision to simply reboot the continuity, rather than deal with all the baggage built up over 30 years, was a good call.

SPOILER

I liked the whole "He's got a tell!" thing, right up until the movie completely telegraphed that the bad guy was intentionally throwing it out there to spoof Bond. First they give us a closeup on his fingers going to his temple, and then they cut to Vesper and that Helper Guy watching the game, and Helper Guy turns to Vesper and says in the loudest whisper ever "MY GOD! JAMES WAS RIGHT! THE TELL! HEY, EVERYBODY! DID YOU NOTICE THE TELL? I THINK IT'S PRETTY IMPORTANT! PAY ATTENTION TO IT! THIS IS WHERE BOND'S INFALLIBLE SKILLS OF PEOPLE-READING SAVE THE DAY! HOLY SHIT THIS IS INTENSE!"

The poker scenes did seem to drag alot in the film especially if you dont know much about poker (as my lil bro kept asking what was goin on...)

The opening trailer and soundtrack was really good though as far as bond soundtracks go!

Yeah, it was kind of disappointing that the movie received so much criticism for not sticking to the usual generic formula - but I like Craig's portrayl. I enjoyed a more flawed, prone-to-make-mistakes James Bond. And I loved Vesper, no matter what anyone has to say.

The poker scenes did drag on a little too much in the movie. There were only 2 big action scenes - the opening and the ending, nothing so much in between. It could've used more explosions - but I loved it nonetheless.

I think this movie is my favorite Bond movie of all.  Daniel Craig did a great job, I thought his portrayal of Bond was the most accurate to the books out of all the actors who have played him.  Sean Connery might have done the best Bond, but he wasn't as true to the character of the books as Craig is.

I think it was definitely less hokey than previous Bond movies too, which made it a lot better, more of a straight action flick.

I saw it last night, and it's definitely an entertaining movie, and a good Bond movie as well. The Prologue scene in black and white was interesting, but other than to establish that this is before Bond had his 00 designation and that "M" is female, I'm not sure what its purpose was.

That chase scene was something, though. Damn! There were at least a few times I yelled "Whoa!" out loud, along with the rest of the theater. Scenes like that are why we still have the Big Screen. All the action scenes kicked ass.

The story was good. I liked that Bond is actually fallible, and seemed to grow during the course of the film. By later in the series, he's already developed that hardened shell. We get to see him grow it here, and why. He's also less reckless, more calculating, and now we know why.

SPOILERS

Bad things: Texas Hold 'Em? Oh dear. I thought I was watching fucking Celebrity Poker Showdown, with Mathis as Dave Foley, except he wasn't in a sound-proof booth. Talk about a total abomination of the game of Poker.

The sequence toward the end where they're all lovey-dovey and he resigns went on far too long. They're in love. Okay, cool. One or two scenes, and a trick to denote passage of time would've worked. Five or six scenes, no. Slowed things down way too much.

And when he did resign, you knew it was her death warrant being signed, and that she was a "bad guy". Lame.

I wasn't sure who the hell Mr. White was supposed to be. I guess if I were paying attention, I would've noted that he was in the early scene in the jungle, as pointed out to me by my Bond-nut friend who's scene it twice already, but sorry, that was 2 1/2 hours ago, and he wasn't really that memorable. Who the hell was he?

He was someone behind Le Chiffre's organization. We're not supposed to know exactly who he works for or what his purpose was, though. That's what a sequel's for.

I just saw it yesterday and I reckon it's one of the best films I've seen in a while. Craig did really really well and it was awesome to see Bond before he was Bond, y'know? Also, I like Texas hold 'em as it's the only poker I can play so I was fine with it. But then I'm not a poker nerd so maybe I don't know what I'm talking about but I know what I like and I definately liked that. Also that first chase sequence? How Prince of Persia was that? (the new ones not the old ones)

Just saw it! First of all i have to say daniel craig might not be classically hot, but he has a great bod and piercing eyes. i've also never seen a bad performance from him.

the opening song was just horrible...i don't know, i think it should almost always be a woman singing the theme song, not chris frickin cornell. the plot made a lot of sense, which is saying something for a bond movie, the girls are still hot and the action was great! who knew james bond knew how to bleed?

oh and obert i think the black and white sequence was just to show who his first two kills were to become a 00.

i didn't understand what he meant by M choosing that such letter??? what was he getting at?

the ending was so badass and that original theme song is still awesome.

Yeah, the thing with M threw me. I haven't read any of the books, so I don't know if it's explained better or differently (or at all), but in the movies, we've already established that M is a title, an office occupied by a person (since it was a guy before and is now a woman). I just figured M is the boss, whoever that is. Similarly, Q is "the gadget guy". We even saw them training "the next Q", who looked a lot like John Cleese.

So when he implied that M was actually her initial, that seemed to contradict what we "knew". He said something to the effect that he thought it was just a random letter, but actually stood for... and then she cut him off. Mary? Madeleine? Mom?

But they never addressed it before, and here they intentionally kept it ambiguous, so maybe they're just messing with us.

The original M's name (from the books) was actually Miles Messervy, implying it represented his name, not just a random letter.

I think it'd be amusing if it stood for "Moneypenny"...

Man, this was the best James Bond film I've seen since Sean Connery Bond film. I mean, there wasn't any huge explosions, wooo!  and there wasn't a Pierce Brosman, he sucked, he is like a stuck up little rich boy. But this guy!!! AMAZING!!! it was actual proper spy stuff! And the opening credits were the best since the first James Bond film. But yeah...All around...Good film.
