Well, I doubt you're the only person who thinks that they're laughable, but your phrasing implies that they weren't always this. I'd have to say that my experience leads me to believe that this IS a solitary viewpoint. Care to expound on the matter?

No. I mean he's snobbish about them both.
I can understand saying 'you must study to enter the land of Zappa' but not going that nuts with the land of metal

I think that their first album was really excellent (as generic of a statement as that is...). The way they infused "math"-y metal with "emo"-ish influences was done really well, or at least very much to my liking, and I think the way they executed it was somewhat original. Starting with the Silent Circus (I believe that's their their second album), their stuff just started becoming boring experiments in technicality, and all of their softer breakdowns just started becoming really cheesy, poorly executed, and somewhat reminded me of any given sensitive Creed song. It got worse from there on later albums, and now I'm pretty sure they're just a joke.
So basically, used to like them, then they became the Mars Volta of metal (over indulgent, boring, and frustrating, because they could probably do better)
