I am sorry but I had trouble reading past this. It was like the "I" was a stake driven into the ground and my eyes were magnetically drawn from it, struggling to get away but only being able to get as far as "U.S.A." before being drawn back to the start again. In fact, I'm pretty sure these words are burned into my retinas just from sheer repetition.

The best umm best of cd (how's that for repetition) I've seen is Gamma Ray's "Blast from the Past". I think they did it because they got fucked over by their label or something and didn't own the rights to their back catalogue. They basically re-recorded all the good songs from their early albums and released them on a double cd pack. It's really good to hear a track like "Heading for Tommorow" with decent production and Kai Hansen on vocals. Iced Earth did a similar thing with "Days of Purgatory" (a lot of their old demo era stuff, from when the band was called 'purgatory').
Storm Rider:
Most of the stuff off Days of Purgatory is far, far better with Barlow on vocals and better sound quality. The Days of Purgatory version of Stormrider (coincidentally) is one of my favorite songs ever.

some other cool stuff i'd recommend would be the directions in music record. its a live record celebrating miles davis and john coltrane. the band is herbie hancock, michael brecker, roy hargrove, john pattituci and brian blade.
john pattituci's record "now" is really cool too.
the keith jarret trio, with jack de jonet and gary peacock have some really great recordings
wayne shorter live at the vanguard is totally awesome and has scott la faro on bass.
basically i think that live jazz records are where its at.
