ImRonBurgundy?:
Ensiferum- "Battle Song"

Brian Majestic:
Europe's "The Final Countdown". Grand fun, and not just because it popped up on Arrested Development

An example is an artist like Tom Waits, who released a bunch of albums throughout many years-Blood Money is not the same as Rain Dogs which is not the same as Closing Time. I won't (generally, there are exceptions) download songs or albums unless it's from a label or artist official site, so the "why recommend one when you can just download all of them" point is moot.

Er... i used Waits as a counter-example, since Rain Dogs runs the gamut from 'grim reapers' (Singapore) to 'grand weepers' (Downtown Train, Time).... its a perfect midpoint album.
But with stuff like Motown or Hank Williams, i'd rather pick up a cheap compilation (how can you go wrong with 40 Tempatations songs for $10?) then a non-existant 'album'

Are there any good record label compilations for stuff like metal and good hip-hop?

Brian Majestic:
Now when you say you like 50s pop, what do you mean by that? Pat Boone, Buddy Holly?

If it's the latter, I would heartily recommend Kaiser George and the Hi-Risers. If this is true, I will make a much more detailed list later.

The Eyeball Kid:
As for downloading... with stuff like bargain bin country and Motown and 'oldies' comps, the time i'd spend downloading 18 songs and getting some sort of context is worth more then the $2 or $10 it costs
Alot of the greatest hits have detailed linear notes... i've got one for Midnight Oil with a great bit by some famous Aussie novelist
also Greatest Hits help select the songs that are presumably the best/most well known
