speakers
« on: 22 Nov 2006, 23:11 »

so i decided it's high time i get a new set of speakers for my computer to listen to music/play games. i looked at the harmon kardon soundsticks, but the lack of a headphone jack sadly makes them an automatic 'no' for me. what would you guys reccommend? is there an equivilent system to the hks but with a jack? i'm looking for something under $150. thanks.

I use studio monitors because I'm a pretentious dick, so I don't really have recommendations for you. However, perhaps if I reply to the thread someone else will read it and answer you?

I actually use my cheap 90$ RCA-Phillips stereo through a Y-Splitter audio cable.  Surprisingly, it works almost as well as top of the line Bose stuff.

Top of the line Bose stuff is an oxymoron.

What do you mean by lack of a headphone jack? If they're quarter-inch, then a quarter inch to 3.5 adaptor costs around ?2.50 for the absolutely ultimate all-metal construction gold plated version (ones with plastic exteriors cost about a third of that, but they fall apart if you so much as look at them wrong). If you want to use the speakers and headphones at the same time you can purchase a little box that plugs in to your computers audio ports and can then you can plug multiple output and input devices into the box, allowing you to change with a push of a button. Or you could just use a splitter and turn the speakers off when you don't want to use them.

I just looked them up and it seems they don't have a headphone out at all

TheFuriousWombat - what are they being hooked up to? Doesn't that have a headphone out?

Most speakers don't have a headphone out. That's what the amp is for.

Speaking of amps, I've currently just got this hooked up to my computer in my Halls of Residence and it is kicking.

mmmm, 15 watts (peak) of pure solid state marshall TONEZ!

I think (although I didn't actually read it) that the amp is attached to the sub. Otherwise he'd be asking for amp recommendations as well

Klipsch promedia

The best (and loudest!) computer speakers I've ever owned.

Seconded.  I've had these for about 6-7 years now, and they are still going strong - probably the oldest piece of electronics I own.

On the other hand, I know dick about speakers, so I'm easy to impress.

nope, not too late. i already have a fairly decent pair of headphones (sony mdr-v600s: ) and was looking at a pair of sennheiser hd-280s. these turtle beaches look pretty decent but i think my current pair is a bit better. my headphones actually cost more than these new klipsch speakers at the time i bought them and i've never had an issue with them really.
