guitarists! (sorry, im tired and bored)
« on: 24 Dec 2006, 05:39 »

well, i'm currently running a Epiphone Dot through a Jade Shadow 802, a Line 6 Space Chorus and a Electro Harmonix Big Muff, and there are three peices of gear for which i lust.

*  Vox AC30CC with the british speakers
*  A Fender Jaguar
*  Graphic EQ pedal

so my question is, what are YOU playing and what would you like?

Epiphone Beast through a terribly small Crate amp. No effects, no nothin'.

I wish I was playing a different guitar through a different amp, though the latter much more than the former. I have a 60's Sears Roebuck tube amp head that I bought at a garage sale for twenty bucks sitting in my basement and it would be nice to get a stack for it and get it working.

I'm using an Ibanez RG350EX through a Marshall 15w amp.

I'm not so bothered about the wattage, but if I had the money I'd get a Line 6 Spider II.

ah gear threads. im have somewhat of a guitar collection.

what do we have here...
(from left to right)
ibanez cimar - el cheapo starter guitar
tiesco something or other - japanese guitar from the 70's, picked up for $25 at a garage sale
RICKENBACKER 4001- i love this thing, i got it for my 18th, and honestly, its the great, its perfect, ignore the shitty strap
Fender Jaguar - japanese, but still, i love it like nothing else
Home made lapsteel - made for school
Ashton acoustic - bought off my sister for $100

The amp was my grandfathers, its old but has this awesome spring reverb, the speakers sound like they might die soon, but if they do, im going to get it restored.

Also, not pictured, but in safe storage behind that cupboard, my grandfathers fender jazz from 60's-70's.
And a Hofner 500/1(beatle/violin bass)

along with a bunch of pedals.

And, yesterday i got a banjo (happy birthday to me)

What i really want though, is a roland space echo.

I'm using an Ibanez RG350EX through a Marshall 15w amp.

I'm not so bothered about the wattage, but if I had the money I'd get a Line 6 Spider II.

those spiders are nice, i played through one at uni.

Vintage metal axxe, through a 100 watt marshall.

The sound produced is classified as 'slay'.

I also have access to my dads ovation. It's one of the ones they dont make anymore cos its got ivory in it and it basicallyt owns your soul.

LTD MH400 (With string locks, \m/. ) combined with a Marshall Bi-chorus 200.
Very loud, very proud.

I wouldn't get  guitar with stringlocks again though, they're frustrating as hell when a string breaks and take forever to set up.

What I would love;
Marshall 100w Valve head.
Marshall 400 cabinet.
ESP Viper
Epiphone Casino (One of the good ones)
Tokai 1960s Les Paul

Stuff I Have and Use Regularly:
-DiPinto Galaxie IV (lefty) (in green, which they apparently don't make anymore)
-Reverend Goblin Amp (Out of production since Reverend retooled their entire product line)

Stuff I'm Planning on Selling:
-Fender Twin Reverb reissue
-Electro-Harmonix Holy Grail Reverb pedal
-some Boss distortion pedal (the yellow one)
-D.O.D. Juice Box overdrive pedal
-Blackstone Mosfet overdrive pedal

Stuff I Would Like to Buy in the Near Future:
-Fender Hot Rod DeVille 212 (or some other similarly-sized tube amp in my price range)
-Jay Turser ES-355 copy (lefty)

Stuff I Dream of Having One Day:
-A left-handed Rickenbacker 360
-A left-handed Gretsch Cadillac Cruiser or Duo Jet

And I wish I could get some time/money to start taking guitar lessons again, because I feel like my playing has slipped somewhat since I stopped taking them.

I have a Fender Jazz USA Highway 1 (with D'Addario's 0.45 Flat Wound strings)
And a Fender Rumble 60W amp

I've heard a lot of people bitching about the Highway 1 models, I really dont know why. My Fender Jazz is relatively cheap, it has a great sound and it's very comfortable. It's pretty much all I need from a bass. The Fender Rumble amp isn't the best one I could get, but it does the job well and I can carry it to small jam sessions and even to concerts.

Im planing on getting a Warwick Corvette, but I'm not sure yet.

My guitar rig is pretty shitty, I play an Epiphone sg through a really old, small fender transistor. But whatever, it's good enough for me, I'm not using it for anything but noodling around at home. My acoustic is even worse, one of those beginner pack guitars, but doesn't bother me, for the sama reasons.

I have a decent bass setup though, a Yamaha BB414 which I play through a 100w fender rumble amp. Loud enough for whatever, and sounds pretty good too.

I have a Gretsch Pro Jet and a 30-watt Line 6 amp. Now I just need to learn to play it.

I'm probably getting a black Pro Jet come tax return time. That or a Telecaster. Also, I might buy Tyler's acoustic/electric.

Right now, I have a 10 year old Epi Firebird, which goes into a Marshall MG15CDR. There's an amp sitting under yon christmas tree which I'm 99.87% sure is an Epiphone Valve Junior (5 watts, class A, single channel), and a distortion pedal, brand and model unknown.

Here's what I want:
Epiphone Les Paul Standard plaintop (vintage sunburst)
Fender '72 Telecaster Custom
Fender P-Bass (white)
Gibson Les Paul Junior
Gretsch 1962 Duo Jet reissue (double cutaway)
Eastwood Classic 6 (orange)
Epiphone Sheraton II (black)
Gibson Custom Shop VOS SG Standard (in white)
Fender Deluxe Reverb combo

The Tele I was talking about would be a MIM Standard, Sam. I'm only going to be working in the $300-400 price range.

Unless you mean I get the Squier version and upgrade the two humbuckers..

That is a great amp, better then the 60W that I have. I love the fact that it's big anough for you to sit on it while you play, yet small enough to carry around.

Also, I talked with my bass teacher today about my bass, and I decided that insted of saving up for a new bass I could just upgrade this one with a Badass II bridge and some good pickups. It'll end up cheaper and better then just buying a new one (considering that all of the guitars that I want so far are about US$1000-2000. I do not have this kind of money).

I have:

A Yamaha EXG. I say 'have' loosely, it's basically useless now except for comedy feedback effects.
A Squier Tele Standard, my current lover.
A Hofner guitar of some sort that's been in my family for thirty-odd years.

I lust after a Telecaster with two pickups, not a Thinline. I think they only make a model of it in Squier form, but that's fine by me. Either that or I'd get a '72 Custom reissue and put in another 'bucker. Plus if I had more cash going spare, I'd get a Mexican Tele Standard. Love the necks on them.

Guitar. I have a Schecter SG-1 Diamond Series Black Widow. Which basicly means it's a kick-ass guitar with a big spider on it.
My amp is a Micro-Cube, tiny little thing. I carry it around. My other amp, the good one, I'm not sure what it is. It's a really old tube amp. Sounds awesome, so I'm glad my uncle gave it to me.

Sir, I believe you're talking of the "Telecaster Deluxe", as per my icon. Fender still makes reissues of them. Squier also makes one, under the moniker "Tele Custom".

Well, yes, but no.

See, the Deluxe has the big fat Strat head, that I don't really like very much on a Tele body. The Squier one has the little Tele head. For the same reason that I wouldn't buy a copy from another brand, the headstock matters to me as far as the guitar's overall shape.

my setup is complete shite.

i got one of those Squire Strat packs to begin playing with.  so it's a Squire Strat, through a 15w Fender Frontman amp, and i'm getting an Digitech Screamin' Blues Overdrive/Distortion pedal tomorrow for Christmas.  i really don't like how the neck is really thin on it.  i'm used to playing a wider, acoustic fretboard.

speaking of acoustics, i have a Washburn D10S acoustic.  i love it.  it is my baby.

i once played a different acoustic from a little known and/or extinct manufacturer called Westbury Guitars.  it had a really nice inlay and pickguard and didn't sound half bad either.

i want an SG style guitar, but i can't afford a Gibson one.  so i'm thinking of someday getting an Epiphone one, but i heard that the necks are heavier than the body.  i would also like to one day get a Line 6 amp.

loud music is better.

Aside from the Les Pauls, Epiphone is infamous for making generally neck-heavy guitars. Just get a decent strap.

i play a fake telecaster with 2 single coild pickups of unknown origin (which sounds surprisingly good for 150 euros) through a fender fm 212r amp. strange choice for the kind of music i make (drone/doom/post rock), but hey, it works when i tune it down 2 whole steps. i also play bass in another band. i own a very cheap model by vision, but it's okay. what i really want:

- some orange amp
- a fender jazzmaster
- a delay effect pedal thingie (soon to be bought)
- a decent bass-amp (currently using someone else's)
- a fuzz box of some kind

I have a black Washburn X10 and a small practice amp. I bought these together used for $100.

It has three pick-ups, but two distinct tones--dead and noisy. I run the amp into my computer for processing, and sometimes into my brother's old bass amp to sweeten the tone up a bit. Granted, my gear sucks, but any gear is good at making noise, right?

Being interested in alternate tuning, I've been keeping my eyes out for an inexpensive 12-string; here are two I am looking at:
http://www.eastwoodguitars.com/GTRs/classic12/images/gtr_Waln-classic12.jpg (Eastwood Classic 12, $450)

I know, Ricks are incredible, I wish I could afford one. I'm just jealous of people with Ricks.

About six months ago I was planning on buying a 4001 model from a friend of a friend for about US$1300. But he sold it before I had the chance to talk to him about it. Now I'm just going to upgrade my Jazz Bass, save up for a double bass, and then start to think about getting a rick.

It's funny. I bought my guitar back when pop-punk was my music of choice, and now that my tastes have matured I would really, really, really like another electric. I mean, the one I have right now, despite being Explorer-shaped (ugh), plays remarkably well, all told - when I play my solo show in a couple months, it's going to be the only thing I play because it sounds good on distorted settings and surprisingly mellow on a clean setting. But if I liked the music I like now, I would have held out for a decent semi-hollow, a Tele, something else. I also used to hate Fender guitars because of how heavy they were but that seems to have gone away over time.

I remember being in a music shop about a year ago and seeing a Japanese Jag/Stang knockoff with lipstick-case pickups and playing it and being absolutely in love with it. I'm going looking for that guitar or something of its ilk as soon as I have the cash for it.

Ah, gear talk.  This is a topic that I wish I knew more about.  I'm a mediocre player, but fortunately, I have enough income to feed my hobby with some decent toys... my collection currently includes:

Most of what I do now is acoustic stuff, just for a change of pace.

1983 Takamine acoustic - I'm not sure if there is a specific model type, but the tone of this guitar is super nice.  It is a large body and has some great resonance.
1986 Fender acoustic - This was a (relatively) inexpensive guitar that my dad bought for himself brand new.  I bought it from him this year and have played it constantly since.  The medium-large body makes a good full sound, but doesn't load up the low end too much.  It is a good "all-purpose" acoustic.
???? Hohner acoustic - My wife got this for me last Christmas.  It has a nice bright tone with the medium strings I'm using.  It is a medium sized body so travels well.
1976 Westbrook acoustic - This was my first guitar when I was 7.  It is a super cheap guitar, but it works.

I've got two electrics now.

1998 (I think) Gibson Les Paul Studio - This is a great guitar.  It is a fairly heavy body but still very comfortable for shows.  It is ideal for a rhythm guitarist that does a few leads now and then.
???? Fender Strat (Mexican Standard) - I picked this thing up used for $150 and it was a STEAL!!!! I especially like the "whammy" bar on it.  The neck is super nice for playing and it has that great Fender brightness.

I play through a Laney 65W 2-channel.  It needs some basic cleaning as some of the pots are a bit scratchy.

For effects, right now I'm using the gain/overdrive from the Laney for my distortion.  I have an old "Script Series" MXR Phase 100, a Digi-tech Tremolo, a Digi-tech Digital Delay, and a good old Cry-Baby for some nice resonance-wah.

It is interesting what you can get with a static setting on the wah-pedal.  You don't really have to "play" it so much...

I also play bass and have an Ibanez ATK bass.  It is a "middle-end" bass with nice action and solid pickups.  I also have an OLD bass which I think is an Applause, but I'm not sure.  The action is great on it, though.  I play through a Crate 200W head with an Ampeg cabinet (2 12" cones).

Sometimes I fiddle with some electronic music and I use an M-Audio Ozonic MIDI controller plugged right into my 15" Powerbook running Garageband.  It is surprising what you can do with free software.  I'm working on getting a copy of Reason for my Mac now.

Oh yeah, I also have an Ibanez hollow-body electric sitting around, but I need to put a neck on it.  I'm not even sure what model it is, but the sustain on it is great.  The neck I have, however, is a piece of crap and it won't hold a tune for anything....any suggestions on a good neck for that?

Do you remember the specific brand?

I don't, besides the fact that it was both a full name rather than initials and definitely a knock-off. I didn't recognize the name at all and the guy in the store (which by the way is the one that the Into Eternity guys work at, though they weren't in at the time) said he'd never seen one by that company before.

Closest thing I can think of to what you're describing is a Charvel Surfcaster.

Ryan's probably got a better idea than I do, because the only full-name Japanese guitar maker that I can think of is Yamaha, and they don't make guitars as much as they make everything known to man.

I will give you alll the only piece of guitar equipment advice that will EVER MATTER IN YOUR LIFE.

Buy a good guitar amp. Seriously, just throw out or sell all your fancy guitars and effects pedals and shit and buy a good amp.

You can play a $3000 guitar through a $200 amp and it will sound like shit. You can play a $200 guitar through a $1300 amp and it will sound amazing. There is no middle ground. Buy a good fucking amp before you buy an even remotely nice guitar. I have learned this through hard experience. You will thank me for it in the long run.

i dunno, i have a 25 watt guitar bass combo amp that i got about 11 years ago when i first started playing and for guitar it has one of the best fuzz sounds i've ever heard.
its good for doom/stoner or maybe darkthronish bm.

having said that, my current set up is as follows:

peavey milestone series II pbass
ibanez sound gear 5 string

hartke ha3500 (this is awesome it has two pre amps-one solid state and one tube so you can use either or you can blend the two and the graphic eq lights up pink!!!)
played through a carvin 4 by 10" cab. i need to get wheels for the cab because its fucking heavy-the guitarist in my band has a marshall stack thingy which is bigger than my cab but weighs less if that gives you any indication.

I have 4 electric guitars, and some amount of acoustics that I can't even remember because they're all crap and I never play them and I even left them at my mom's house when I moved.
My main axe is some bright orange 80's looking Ibanez shred type deal with the floyd rose and everything. Steve Vai's signature can be made out very faintly on the body if you hold it in the right light, but I'm not sure if it's actually a Steve Vai or just an RG. I also have a 7 string RG which is complete shit that I just bought because it had 7 strings and I thought it was funny. I have a custom Warmoth that I bought used. The body type is like a Fender Musiclander which I have NEVER seen in person. I also have an Ibanez Artcore full hollowbody which I use for school mostly. I play through a Boss GT-6 pedalboard on which I have programmed many custom presets, as I find most of the factory presets to be terrible and poorly balanced in comparison to each other. When I practice at home, I use a tiny Dean Markley amp which is falling apart and I am looking to replace with a Peavey Bandit 112. For band practice/concerts, I use a Hughes and Kettner Duotone 120 head through an Ampeg straight 4x12 cab.

I'd have to agree with Jeph, I once took my redYAMAHA SE112 (strat copy) into Tom Lee Music to try out some other pedals. I ended up wanting a differnt amp instead. I have also a brown ANJO nylon string acoustic and a blue Johnson acoustic. I use a BOSS OS2 pedal occasionally and my first amp was a Samic S10 but i recently picked up a PEAVEY Rage amp.

Yeah, definitely! I got my guitar for $130 and it sounds fucking great through my $700 amp. The pickups and the amp, and to a lesser extent, the strings are what matter most for tone. Maplewood body, cherry neck blah blah blah, yeah it matters but not all that much.

I don't have anything ,but a single Harmony Strat. My guitar, and amp are floating about. My custom Ibanez dubbed "Casino" was sold by my friend for $50 so he could buy beer. I brought my acoustic to a party, and got too drunk. It got left in the rain.

Most of them were just cheap things, but the Ibanez was my baby so I was mad about that.
