Swan Lake?
« on: 27 Dec 2006, 22:59 »

When I first heard these cool cats were getting together I instantly got hard. I listened to All Fires and Are You Swimming in Her Pools? and my balls almost fell off. But now that I have the actual album, ehh.

I love Destroyer, Frog Eyes, Sunset Rubdown, Wolf Parade, New Pornographers, blah blah. But frankly all the swirling guitars and unhinged vocals on Beast Moans just gave me a headache. DAMMIT I WANTED TO LOVE THIS ALBUM I'M GONNA RAPE A BITCH!

Sorry I couldn't articulate my opinion better but I'm not much of a reviewer

I refused to listen to it for the two months or so during which it had leaked, and didn't listen to any of the mp3's released either.  Then, I bought it the day it came out.  At first, parts of the album seemed a mess, too much happening all at once, too many ideas and conflicting melodies.  This was especially true in the Carey Mercer songs.  Then, I gave it a few more listens, and it just hit for me.  The melodies are all in there, it just takes a few listens to decode them, the swirling guitars and unhinged vocals soon seem less prominent, more fitting in with the overall song as you give it more listens.  I have only heard a few albums this year that rival Beast Moans for ambition (Current 93's album, Black Ships Ate The Sky is probably the closest contended), and it really seems to accomplish what it set out to do.  My album of the year.

He clearly is consumed by frustration due to the inability to articulate properly, causing him to relapse into his days before our correctional facilities taught him to love society again.

Prison tainted him, everyone.

I dunno. I've listened to the album a couple more times and it's starting to lose its appeal for me, coming across instead as a bit of an unfocused mess.

i'm of the same mind here. as an ardent supporter of frog eyes and a definite fan of wolf parade, sunset rubdown, and destroyer (perhapes the last one the least of all) i was very excited to here this. but it is a super group and super groups don't have a history of being as good as the individuals artists projects. sadly, beast moans, while fairly decent, doesn't compare to bejar's, krug's, or mercer's non swan lake stuff imho.

Um, I'm kind of in the same vein of thought as the first poster, minus the raping of bitches. And balls falling off. Plus some articulation.

Basically.....I am a ridiculously big fan of Bejar. I follow anything he does like a loyal little puppy dog, 'cause that's how fangirls go. I have nearly as much love for Krug, and while I had never listened much to Mercer I figured that he must be pretty awesome if he was working as an equal with the other two. When I first heard about their collaboration, and when the album first leaked, I was more excited than I can express again and I was there on it in a flash.

And meh. That's all I've got to say. I listened to it once after the leak, was not impressed, but from the ambiance of the whole thing I decided that it'd probably sound better in winter (....yes, I have albums that I consider 'seasonal'.) So I waited until the release date before I listened again. And again. And again. Trying to hear the goodness that HAD to be buried somewhere in it.

And I heard it. Eventually. But it was far more difficult to hear, and far less enjoyable than Sunset Rubdown, Wolf Parade or anything Destroyer's done (I have yet to properly check out Mercer) so I pretty much stick to those.

I'll give Beast Moans another chance someday soon though, I know I will.

I've found Beast Moans preferable to every Destroyer album I've heard (which is four or five of them), though I still love Destroyer.  Wolf Parade I do prefer to Swan Lake though.  Sunset Rubdown is really close, though Swan Lake still wins in my mind.  The only Frog Eyes album I've heard, The Golden River, I absolutely adore, but I've yet to listen to it closely enough to stack it up against Beast Moans.

More like Counter Strike :(

Sorry about all the inarticulation, I've yet to adapt to this "omg quip omg sarcasm" world you call the QC Forums, but what Johnny said is basically what I meant.

So until I learn to speak like you classy gents I'll just latch myself onto the quotes of people better than I.

I take it you've heard Destroyer's Rubies?? I always liked Dan Bejar's songs with the New Pornographers the best (I like A.C. Newman but IMO Bejar's stuff with them is superior) and Destroyer's Rubies is my first and only Destroyer album, which I love to death. I have probably listened to it more than any other album that came out this year, so it's hard for me to believe somebody could prefer any other Bejar project to it.

I've heard Rubies, and it is a great album, though it hasn't really hit me that much.  I haven't listened to it a ton, so it may yet grow on me.  My current favourite Destroyer album would have to be Streethawk: A Seduction, which is absolutely incredible.  I still need to seek out a bunch more Destroyer albums though.  But anyway, I do prefer Beast Moans to all of it.

Even if you don't like Destroyer's Rubies that much as an album, the first song is fantastic. It may take a while to appreciate the rest of the album as much as that first track, I'll admit, but once you do you will be in love with Dan Bejar. Yes, I'm in love with a man.

Edit: @Dark Flame, Shit I forgot you said you already liked Destroyer. Oh well, Rubies is good anywho

I think the song that convinced me that Destroyer would make this year's top ten for me was "3000 Flowers." It's just so goddamned awesome.

Oh and don't worry about being articulate or whatever, you were doing fine except for the casual mention of rape, an action which is frowned upon socially and on these forums.

pfft, always comes back to the rape with you people

In my country, "rape" roughly translates to "very pretty lady very shiny hair". So I didn't really see any problem with it

Obvious joke: you people?!

I was pretty dissapointed by the Swan Lake album.  Maybe it's because i'm a fan of Bejar but not the rest of the collaborators, meh.
