Mnementh:
What use are rock hard abs?
YES, I'M GOING TO FLEX MY ABS NOW AND THIS 400LBS DRESSER WILL RISE OF THE GROUND AT MY WILL.
I think that working on your abs excessively is a complete waste of time. You're really either born with the body type or not, in either case you should make sure you have strong core muscles, but not to the detriment of the rest of your body. Dudes, having rock hard abs don't mean shit to me it takes you eight minutes or more to run a mile and you can't do a pull up or push up to save your life. Ladies, you sure are pretty if you take care of your body in general, I don't notice the abs all that much.

Ladies I don't really notice abs. As far as dudes, yeah, they're kind of useless. But they're hot. I'm not talking like bodybuilder abs either; just your normal "something other than the flab that currently sits on my waistline" look.
elcapitan:
What Dan said. Abs are totally not worth worrying about - I've seen too many people get disappointed with not being able to have them, when they really shouldn't be.
Point to remember is, your abs are there - it's just whether you can see them or not behind your natural body fat. I know guys with much, much more core strength than me who don't have defined abs - their body type just isn't right. By contrast, I pretty much have good abs all the time, but I'm piss weak at the moment - I just have a relatively low amount of body fat. ("Ectomorphic," if you want to use the overly simplistic idea of somatotypes.)
If you want one thing that will make you look and appear healthier, it's (IMHO) great cardio fitness. Not being out of breath and overly sweaty when you do stuff is a Good Thing.

I have seen said roommate. This travel would indeed be worth it.

I recall reading that is actually unhealthy for women to have (clear & defined) abs? The article on women's fitness said you can have a nice six-pack for a little while but it is very unhealthy to sustain that little body fat in the long run, I think.
Tummys can be pretty darn sexy. I will never have abs because my body-shape has a little tummy. Always have, and always will. Just means I need to work my chest to make it look less pronounced. Work with what you've got, people!
...I resolve to work on building a better chest this year.
