Broken Ipod LCD screen
« on: 13 Jan 2007, 05:51 »

I don't know if this really belongs in the music section of the forum, but I don't really care right now because I'm too pissed off to.  I just dropped my Ipod on my kitchen floor and cracked the LCD screen.  It still works, but part of the screen is obscured by all the liquid crystal.  Does anyone know a good place, online or offline, to get the LCD replaced?  I've Googled "Ipod LCD repairs" and found a few places, but I'm not sure as to the validity of them yet, and I don't want to get scammed.  Any help would be appreciated.

Ouch... I don't know man you might be SOL. Apple is notorious for making irrepairable products. I'll shut up now though because my 40 gb Creative Zen broke a couple months back and it cannot be fixed...

Shit man that's awful. How old is it? You might still have some parts warranty on it, and as notorious as Apple are for making products which can be repaired only by a cabal of California-based Apple warlocks they also have a bit of a reputation for being great with customer service.

Well, it's over a year old, so the warrantee is void.  I've run across a few places online that advertise Ipod repairs, but I'm not going to just trust them like that.  I was thinking that maybe places that sell Ipods, like Best Buy and Wal-Mart, could help me.  I dunno, I may just have to live with it (I can see pretty much everything except the upper left hand corner of the screen), and I'll definitely be purchasing a protective case for it.

The lessen of this thread is that apple products are style over substance and you are a complete fucking tool for buying their shit. Go splash out on a nice Sony, it'll still be whirring away after cockroaches die.

Stone cold sober, giving my honest opinion of the gimmicky impracticality of Apple products as an art student exposed to their filth every day. 'Lessen' was a typo.

Actually don't bother with Sony. They don't seem to make the Vaio pocket anymore. I suspect it didn't get enough market share, which is a shame because it is a sexy beast and mine has survived me stepping on it at least twice, which would turn an iPod in to something less than a stain.

Hmmm. .  I've found some used ones, but I'm not gonna go for that.  At least you didn't recommend a Zune.  I did find a place that seems pretty legit and even has instructions accompanied by photos that explain how to replace the screen yourself, and I can order the new screen and tools (and instructions, though I already have those) for $40.  Seems pretty decent: www.kokopellimusic.us

Man, I had that exact same problem. I rang the company and because Creative don't have an Australian tech-support branch I had to ring the Asia-pacific branch, to someone who spoke broken English and refused to help me. They told me it wasn't covered by warranty, I told them I knew it wasn't covered by warranty, and just wanted to pay to have it fixed, and where could I do that without voiding the warranty and basically they told me to screw off.

Luckily the place I bought it at took it back, put the hard word on them for me and got it fixed, for free even though I made it perfectly clear to all parties involved that it broke because I was drunk as hell and dropped it on the ground, dragging it behind me up the street without realizing .

Moral of the story? Creative Labs bad, JB Hi-fi good!

Im sorry but to denounce Apple in favour of Sony?  What world do you live in that Sony doesnt make cumbersome wrecks with anything that has to do with portable media?  I am fairly certain theres a Department of Fucking-Consumers-In-The-Ass at Sony, at least found there niche and dominated it and still maintain a decent amount of customer support.  The sole exception being no third party Apple product repairs.

In defense of the iPod, I've had two, and both have taken a lot of shit from me. The first generation was regularly left to freeze in my car, it was dropped several times usually from mid-chest height, and it was sat on once. I had it for a good two and half years, before selling it to a friend, who still uses it to this day. We thought it died once when Air Canada lost my luggage and left it in a sub-zero warehouse for a few days, but it kicked back to life a little bit after that.
The fourth generation, non-photo, has been through most of the same stuff, though it's never been left alone in 30 below weather for very long. I'm fairly pleased with the product, though I wouldn't buy a new one. It seems newer mac products are being less reliable, probably because they're shifting gears to sell more and more machines and compromising quality in doing so, as well as that the new ones don't let you use firewire. Transfering 20 gigs of data over USB, no thank you!

Well, I've been using mine again lately, and the obscuring isn't that bad.  I still plan to replace the screen eventually, but it's not worth just putting the Ipod away and never looking at it again.

Sony products do generally last a hell of a long time....especially when you compare them to I-pods!

Have had my Sony Walkman NW-HD3 for over 4 years no and aint had no problems with it at all! Only thing bad with it is the software!

Aye, the software is a bit of a bitch. Best software I ever used was Creative, but I don't like the newer models of the zen, the touch-pad is mind-bogglingly fragile.

Sony makes good hardware, but the software and PR sides of things are about as un-consumer friendly as I can fear.  I am not a hater without past experience.  My Net MD walkman MZ-M505-R technically still works, the best feature it had was a tremendous battery life using only 1 AA battery.  But its a piece of shit that makes adding or taking off music rediculous.  Not to mention a good 20% of my music wont convert to their proprietary format(ATRAC3 with 66kbs/96kbs and 132kbs).  The Open MG software that it originally came with was bloated and repeatedly crashed.  SonicStage its replacement is also bloated but was slightly more stable.  But the fact that the quality formats were rather odd and you essentially needed 2 copies of every song, .mp3 and .omg as well as the fact that I couldnt convert my entire library at once without about 7 years of computing time in which it would inevitably crash anyway.

And I am not going to go into the Rootkit debacle

I had a Creative Zen and it worked really great and I loved it (although it was a little beefy, but wutevs) until eventually the software started acting up. So I went onto their site, followed the instructions to reinstall the firmware. Going great until the firmware installer basically freezes and dies.

I figured it was just my computer being a shit-eater, but a look at their forum basically made me pretty sure it was their faulty firmware.

Other than that it was a pretty sweet product.

Apparently, I'm the exception, but my iPod has lasted much longer than my Creative Zen did.

I work for Best Buy customer service and I can tell you that the highest quality mp3 player on the market is by far the Zune.

I have yet to have one need to be replaced since they were out.  On the other hand I probably replace 10 ipods a day, Nano1 nano2, shuffle, video, you name it they suck.

Also the Creative Zen lasts much longer also.  Only replaced 2 of them ever at our store, The 12th busiest BBY in the country.

I've got a 30gb vid ipod and I love it. I've never had any problems with it (though I loath iTunes) even after several drops from respectable heights. Mind you, it probably survived because the first thing I did after buying the ipod was go buy a sturdy-ass 50$ case.

i've had a similar experience with my ipod, luckily. i have a relativly cheap hard plastic case which seems to do the trick. over the summer i must have dropped it on the ground from an elevated sitting position (think sitting on a stool height) and it's never given me any problems. this shocks me in a rather pleasant way. as for readyforafall: just b/c no one returns the zune does not mean it's a high quality produce. durability and quality are hardly the same thing. i think it's been well established that the zune is satan encapsulated in a small plastic rectangle.
