The Best Games Nobody's Ever Actually Beaten
Narr:
Those games were like Baldur's Gate + Expansion + Bladur's Gate II + Expansion + Icewind Dale rolled into one.
Jackie Blue:
I think the first PC RPG I beat without any help from a strategy guide (you damn kids and your "GameFAQs! In my day you had to PAY for Strategy Guides!") was Wizardry: Bane of the Cosmic Forge, and I got such a great feeling from solving all those puzzles, mapping all those mazes, and actually levelling my characters in an effective way without any outside help.
Actually some pre-'91 RPGs weren't overly long or difficult - Wasteland, obviously, is still extremely playable and enjoyable today.
But then you had stuff like Starflight. Oh God, the hours I wasted playing Starflight and doing absolutely nothing. Starflight was like an MMORPG only you're the only player in the entire gameworld and you had to look ridiculously hard to figure out that there was actually a way to "win". It was hard to even figure out there was supposed to be any kind of goal to it!
Johnny C:
Glory days, they'll pass you by.
Jackie Blue:
Oh yes, the Underdogs and Abandonia are glorious places filled with endless amusement.
imapiratearg:
How many people have played the game Croc for the PS One? I don't think that's it's full title, but it was a platformer, and it was freaking hard. I was permanently stuck on one level, and then forgot about it. I still think about it from time to time.
