Help out a WoW newbie!
« on: 11 Nov 2006, 07:49 »

I've played FPS for as long as I can remember, but I've never really touched on MMO's or RPG's that much. Obviously WoW would be a starting point, but what do you guys recommend I do to get started?

(Note: I'm in Australia so I'm not sure about which server to use.)

Thanks in advance!

I'm really new myself, but a couple of things I've learned...
 * Loot them corpses. If it isn't a quest item, you can sell it. Discover and remember the approximate values of things in the area you're in, so if you have to make the choice between two different items, you'll make the right (read: profitable) choice.
 * Groups are your friend. Find people to grind (or whatever it's called, with the grouping and the killing and the questing, flaigen) with, they will save your ass.
 * Read the stuff on the interweb about good class/race pairings. I started out as a human warrior, rather standard, but pick somthing that'll suit your style.
 * Have fun. People turn WoW into Serious Business?. It's a freaking game, man. Enjoy yourself, go at your own pace. And ignore the idiots that laugh at you mid-battle. (This happened to me a couple of minutes ago. Christ, I'm only level 8, go pick on someone your own size, assgoblin.)

Might call me a pessimist, but get out of there while you're still ahead. Trust me on that. You'll waste way too much time and get far too little out of it.

Ok: Update.

1) Played WoW. For five seconds. WTF. So many numbers. So many teenagers. Eeew.
2) Download the BF2142 demo. Kickass, never touching WoW again.

Barrens chat? Must've had a taste of merely a tip of the iceberg. BF2142 retail is filled with way more idiots :(

Please ignore my previous moodswing, im back into WoW, i figure i can play it casually, since it is a good game, but i don't see it as life-consuming as CS:S.

Should that be all one sentence?

Advice?

Regarding knowing what's profitable and what isn't.....get the auctioneer addon. Very useful, tells you how much each item will sell for. Very helpful when you have more items than bag space.

Oh...and if you're a priest, group buttons is the coolest thing ever.

Enchanting is a kinda useless profession, unless you plan to use it just to disenchant things, since shards are worth a bit more than the items themselves. Well, it's nice once you get really high, but requires paying far too much for minimal gain most of the way up.

Turn off general chat as soon as you get in.

Large bags are the most important thing you can buy.

I'm sure I could keep going awhile......but that said, I've canceled my account. But hope that's helpful.

Alrighty... quitting is a good idea. I'll just put that out there.

If you're determined to play, though, find a server whose time zone will best match up to when you can raid. This may or may not ever come in handy, but you'll regret having to transfer because everyone on your server raids at 7 AM your time or something.

After that... play a lock. ;)

Okay. For starters, and I cannot stress this enough, ROLL HORDE. I have one level 60 of each faction, and horde is so much better at everything. and I mean EVERYTHING. I have yet to win a single Warsong Gulch or Arathi Basin fight with a pickup alliance group.

I win with a pickup Alliance group more than 50% of the time. Sooo...whatever.

Honestly, roll whatever you feel most comfortable with. In a PvP server, the two factions will be even. In any other kind, the Alliance have waaaaay more people.

people iv found really only go for allience because they all mostly look like humans, and have damn dirty pallies who need to die, while i my self am probly still in the newb stage (being only level 20) iv found that being a warlock and hunter are the coolest people to be by being able to have pet/minion as well as being able to do range attacks while said pet/minion does close range attacks.

once i find the pallie poem ill post it here

Godammit. What is it about WoW that just kills time? I come back from the movies, load up WoW, look at the clock, OH SHIT IT'S 6 PM. I guess when you play CS:S and UT2k4, it's all about rounds, and set time-limits, but still, WoW just sucks up the time.

Ok, i've played it for a little while, and now I'm a Lvl 12 Dwarf Paladin. I think that puts an end to me being a 'newb'. Thanks for all the advice.

My main is a 38 mage, and I'm still constantly reminded of HOW MUCH OF A NOOB I REALLY AM. I don't think you advance beyond n00b status until you have at least one 60. At least, that's how it seems to be on my server.

I haven't played WoW in about a year, but my experiences on a RP server were great. And yes, roll horde!

Not being in the WoW scene for awhile, can anyone tell me if they have RP-PVP servers now?

They do, but the larger part of the players there seem to think that RP-PvP means Really Powerful PvP. It\'s a good idea, but it doesn\'t work in practise, because the people there are (for the most part) complete smacktards.

This makes me sad. There's so many imbeciles on that game. I play mostly horde, but tried out a dwarf hunter on an rppvp server once. It doesn't seem to change much after 20 levels. You'd think they'd try to enforce it a little bit.

<sigh>, I guess real internet role-playing is just not meant to be

there are a lot of smacktards

and there are a lot of nice players

Hey, there is just a shitload of players! (just like real life!)
Played a lot during those 14 months, and with fun people. It really isn't tough at all to find nice peeps, frm a guild and do stuff. Your average random 5man scholo team when you just hit 60 may be with idiots or people that think they can be rude

or have all the time with normal peeps.

Uhhh.......

Hoarde Has the BEST PKERS fullstop. on almost EVERY SERVER....YOu hear about groups of good Alliance? Yeah.....they are few and far between. This is comming from someone who knows (irl mind you) some of the best pkers On a couple servers... Drakkar on Burning Legion (not sure what he is on some others) He even had an alliance lvl 60 night elf rouge for awhile.....but dropped that char when he was the only one killing anything in raiding parties....

Hoard has on almost all the servers a few pkers who will do crazy shit like soloing Iron Forge, and winning... Camping a contested major monthly instance so hard the GM's had to come down from on high and ask them to leave it alone for a few hours so the alliance groups could complete it. Now...all that being said you'll rarely see these guys around anymore, they are usually out leveling alts or raiding in a lowbie party. or Pharming.... They rarely pk anymore save after someone ganks one of their lowbies....why? because they don't need to....Hell the last time Swaggs played on Drakkar (one of the reasons totems and melee shamans got nerfed) was when he was leveling his Undead Priest and some idiot portal ganked his ass....Anyways.....The main reason I don't play WoW is because I have a tendancy to get severly addicted to shit like that. Hell I put nearly 6,000 hours on a MuD in a little under a year....and for what? the MuD died and I was the last remaining PKer. I got into FFXI for a bit....and well in 5 months I had a lvl 75/35 Dragoon Samurai which then got nerfed and I quit. I also got into RO, and ended up with a sniper in WoE and then got bored there too....(nuking mages from off screen just gets boring after awhile.) Anywho..... Hoard, alliance is for the lovey dovey explorer type. They get the best quests, but the trade off is the end up having to dodge hoarde the whole time.

the only thing i can say about battlegrounds is that the only reason horde wins is because you get all these people on the alliance side who won't stick together and protect each other. everyone wants to solo. i have won warsong i think twice and i haven't won arathi or alterac. i always get stuck with people who refuse to listen to battle masters, so i haven't done it in a while. (i'd be on horde, but all of my friends on my server are alliance. which kinda sucks.)

WoW is fun until you take it too seriously. it's a freaking game. but a lot of annoying teenagers play a lot, so in cities, don't really pay attention to general chat unless you are looking for something specific. and if you can, turn off the trade channel. it's annoying.
