The Metal Recs and up-coming Releases Thread
« on: 14 Jan 2007, 01:57 »

Hello!

In order not to make just another recommendations thread, which I know is endlessly tedious, this will also be the place to discust up-coming metal releases if you so desire.

But first recommendations:
I am a recently converted metalhead of sorts and I need recommendations to dig deeper in so to speak.
Here is what I like right now:
Mastodon
Forefather(Engla Tocyme)
Kayo Dot(though I wouldn't call them a "real" metal band)
Black Sabbath
Atheist(what I have heard which isn't much)
Bathory(mostly Hammerheart)
Later Burzum(Filosofem no, Hlidskjalf yes)
Xasthur and bits and pieces of other "suicidal" bm.
Finntroll
Entombed
Nile
Arcturus
some off My Dying Bride's latest(but I can't stand the lyrics)

I don't enjoy metalcore that much but some borderline stuff like Baroness. I really don't like power metal mainly because of the tasteless use of keyboard and the sheer over-the-top-ness. I lean towards hardcoreisque, technical metal, "avant-garde" and bm artists mostly.

As for 2007 metal releases, I am looking forward to Jesu - Conqueror, Behemoth - The Apostasy, Finntroll - Ur, Jordens Djup and maybe Blut Aus Nord - Odinist. I am most excited about Jesu, a trememdous album hopefully.

I've seen a couple of tracks off of Ur played live and it will be fucking good, I think, though you must remember I was so drunk I couldn't feel pain.

Based off your current listening, you should probably be listening to:

Agalloch, Wyrd, Nortt, Waylander, Ephel Duath, Borknagar, ...And Oceans, Lykathea Aflame, Candlemass, Ancient Rites, Isengard, Cynic, Darkthrone, Carnival in Coal, Aborym, Carpathian Forest, Vintersorg, Abyssic Hate, Demilich, old Ulver, Acid Bath, Cathedral, Crotchduster, Yrkoon, Decapitated, Electric Wizard, Judas Iscariot, old Anathema, Woods of Ypres, Vlad Tepes, Orange Goblin, in about that order.

On general principles you should also be listening to:

Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Motorhead, Skyclad, Mercyful Fate, Cryptic Wintermoon, old Entombed, The Count Nosferatu Kommando, Running Wild, Grave, Immortal, Sabbat and a ton of other amazing shit I don't have time to think of right now.

Also, if you're going to listen to My Dying Bride, I reccomend you get your hands on a little old album called Turn Loose the Swans. It makes everything else they did look like piss, and a lot of their other stuff is very good.

EDIT: even as I pressed save and left the house to obtain the quantities of beer, chinese food and rolling tobacco that shall be sustaining me this evening, I realised that there were things I'd left off. The first list should definitely mention Sigh, Voivod and Amorphis up to the album 'Elegy'. The second, Edge of Sanity.

Well...since the bastard above me covered most of what I was gonna say already...
Radiation 4 (hardcoreish avant garde, with a little technical)
Spawn of Possession (really technical)
Gorguts (technical avant-garde) [see also: Negativa]
Negura Bunget and Windir (two of my favorite BM bands)
uneXpect (avant garde out the ass, and pretty technical)
Fantomas (hehehe)
Genghis Tron (hardcoreish, sorta avantgarde)
probably more, but I can't find them, my other hard drive is downstairs at the moment.

Aside from whats allready been listed:

Based on Arcturus, Suicidal BM and Bathory:
I'd reccomend Vintersorg, Borknagar, Summoning, Ulver (you'd probably like their mid period stuff best try "Themes") and later Enslaved

as for Upcomming Releases what I'm really looking out for is:

Therion - Gothic Kabbalah

It's a double album and it features Ken Hensley (slide guitarist/keyboardist from Uriah Heap as a guest musician) should be interesting.

I'm not the hugest fan of Mayhem I'll admit, but I'm curious as to what they come up with. I thought 'Grand Declaration of War' was pretty interesting, which is odd because most people think its their worst. As for 'Chimera', yeah that was pretty bland.

I haven't heard a lot of Wintersun, but I wasn't real impressed with what I did hear, sounded like a less epic more 'shred' version of Ensiferum. Speaking of which it will be interesting to see how they do without Jari.

Theres probably going to be a new Opeth album this year too...

Yeah but Faust has joined Aborym permanently now hasn't he? Say what you will about he's drumming and he's incarcaration but he's lyrics are very good, I'd say it's one of the few re-deeming things about Zyklon.

I wonder whom Aborym will replace Atilla with.

I reckon they should just put a mic in front of Nysrok Infernalien, and anyone who's heard and enjoyed Alien Vampires will probably agree with me. Chernobyl is my Throne motherfuckers! \m/.

People I would like to see do it would be Dave Hunt (aka Dave Cunt aka V.I.T.R.I.O.L., of Mistress, Benediction and Anaal Nathrakh), just because I want an english lad in Aborym and he's the only sane choice (Except MAYBE Metatron from The Meads of Asphodel). Also, how insanely bitching would it be if they just all came to Milan Fras' door, bowed on their knees and were all like 'MASTER! SING FOR US!' and he did a gig with them.

And I was there.

Of course.

Oh, oh, I know, they can go on hiatus and wait for Varg Vikernes. There needs to be a proper black as fuck band with a longer criminal record than Scum.

All these releases that I don't know anything about......I need a good site to check up on release dates and other metal news, cuz I got nothing. The only album I'm looking forward to being released is Porcupine Tree's Fear of a Blank Planet in April, and Blackfield II in Marchish. Beyond that, I got nothing.

And when does Varg get out anyway? When'd they extend his sentence till?

And hell, I didn't even know Mayhem still existed.

The smart moneys on April 2008. When he was convicted, he was allowed to claim parole under Norwegian law as early as June 2006, but since then they've changed the minimum period from 12 years to 14 years. Varg and his lawyer may launch a lawsuit against this, as he believes that it breaches an article of the constitution that prohibits legislation being given retroactive force, and possibly elements of the European convention on human rights, but I doubt it will come to anything before he actually gets paroled anyway. There's always the possibility that he won't get parole of course, owing to his escape attempt and the media hype around his case: it wouldn't be the first time he's been fucked over: he's only in for involuntary manslaughter and arson, except that he's had an additional arson case and manslaughter pinned on him as well (a fireman who died in one of the church burnings), under quite dubious circumstances. Snorre Ruch only got eight years,

What did Snorre Ruch get done for anyway, afaik it was only for driving Varg to Eurnynomous's apartment.

Is he ever going to put out another Thorn's album???

I thought the Emperor / Thorns split was pretty interesting, "?rie Descent" is a really good song.

Accessort to murder and perverting the course of justice were his charges I believe. Vargs case is interesting because, though there's no doubt that he's guilty, the whole case is a complete unjust shambles.

ATG have been broken up for years, unless that was a reccomendation...

In that case get with Fear I kiss the Burning Darkness, the middle is pretty inconsistent but the first 4 songs and the last 3 make up for it.

Slaughter of the Soul spawned thousands of really bad metalcore bands across the US, and vicariously, the whole 'flailing is dancing' movement.  I can't forgive At The Gates for something like that.

Slaughter of the Soul was a huge change for them stylistically, being much more Thrash influenced. Listen to the first Haunted album, which is the directon they were obviously heading with SOTS.  Despite the Hardcore vocals its not a metalcore record at all. But yeah Slaughter did inspire a shit load of crap bands.

I prefer to remember them for their earlier albums, especially With Fear and The Red in the Sky they are very good melo DM.

If you want to listen to seminal MDM, pick up Dark Tranquillity's 'The Gallery' or Edge of Sanity's 'Crimson' or 'Purgatory Afterglow'. Both of them easily surpass any single entry in ATG's discography, and they're much more overlooked.

I've never been really able to get into At the Gates. I mean sure I'll still recommend them, since other people do like them, but they have never come close to Dark Tranquillity for me.

I think the description of Wintersun as a more shreddy, less epic Ensiferum is fairly accurate. I certainly find Wintersun boring compared to Ensiferum.

Also, I have to wonder sometimes if Vikernes is a sociopath. In interviews he comes off as calm and reasonable, yet he's also responsible for some very stupid and irrational behavior.

I Dunno Dark Tranquility never really interested me. Sky Dancer is a fucking good record but the rest of their stuff just seems kind of I don't know "meh" would be a good description, it's not essential but its still pretty consistent.

When people start talking about the "Big 4" Gothenberg bands from the early 90's (Eucharist, At The Gates, In Flames and Dark Tranquility). I think they'll get a different answer from each person they ask about which was best.

Eucharist were fucking amazing, their first album is excellent and Mirrorworlds is damn amazing.  Pity they broke up so early. I guess their legacy still surrives a bit thanks to Daniel Erlandsson being in Arch Enemy.

At The Gates is my favorite, just for "The Red in the Sky is Ours" and "With Fear I Kiss the Burning Darkness", Alf Svensson and Anders Bjorler were pretty much the ultimate guitar duo, they complimented each other perfectly. Songs like "Beyond Good and Evil", "Raped by the Light of Christ", "Kingdom Gone" are all favorites of mine.

In Flames were killed by Anders Friden, "Lunar Strain" with its folk influences and "Subterranean" (with Henke Forss from the incredibly awesome Dawn on Vocals)   are easily their best albums. Whoreacle was pretty much their last true melo dm album.

As I mentioned above Dark Tranquility have 1 fucking good album "Sky Dancer" then they have a couple of ok albums "Gallery", "Damage Done" and "Projector"  but they don't seem to do as much for me as the other three. Of course it's all just personal taste...

I know, I know, necromancy and all that but I have a question.
From a Pitchfork article(oh heresy!) I learned of a bm/noise band called Wold and their new Screech Owl album? anyone heard it? can you verify the supposed awesomeness?
The small snippet on Profound Lore is intriguing but their manifesto is ridiculous and in the Pitchfork interview they seem like a bunch of wankers.
