Pretty tragic. I guess it's good that he seemed to have a sense of humor about the whole thing, and at least no one was hurt. I'm a big fan of his work, and it's a bummer that the original manuscripts are gone now.

Eddings is obviously lying about the cause. It was Chamdar!

Dude's 75 years old? Holy crap, man...

I've read all of Eddings' old works, plus the Redemption of Althalus (which, incidentially, is my only autographed Eddings book). Haven't bothered reading his new stuff.

I got Belgarath and Polgara for Christmas, but it's been so long since I read The Belgariad and The Malloreon that I now have to read them again first, or at least The Belgariad. Damn, that's going to take a while. But I feel the need to do this properly.

Matt, I don't think you really need to.  He is definitely the master of formulaic fantasy, so it will more or less be the same book with different names and places.

Yeah, I didn't think so.

The Elenium & The Tamuli are pretty high up in my all-time great fantasy list, though. Probably because I read them when I was so young. My handle for pretty much any online game (EverQuest especially, when I played it) is Spaerhawk. (Someone, like 8 years ago when I was first thinking of a handle, had already chosen Sparhawk, so I added an e.)

Oh my. Have to love those "it seemed like a good idea at the time" moments.

I've only read the Belgariad, but I really enjoyed it. So long as no one was hurt, I guess it's not too tragic.

Actually, Reed College graduates are known for their incredible lack of common sense.  I set my kitchen on fire because I threw a glass of water into a cup of boiling oil.  I'm pleased to see that I was only following in the footsteps of one of our more notable alumni...
