Grindhouse
« on: 09 Apr 2007, 06:01 »

I did a search and didn't find any other threads on this movie, so I wanted to start one because my husband and I went to see it this weekend.

If you are a fan of cheesy, B-movie, grindhouse-style pulp, I *HIGHLY* recommend going to see this in the theater.  It was so much fun - we both laughed so hard that we left the theater with headaches.  For those of you not familiar with the concept I will give a brief description (but I promise, no spoilers).

Grindhouse is intended to be a movie-going experience.  It is a throw-back to the old rated R grindhouse movies of the '60s and '70s, which usually featured lots of action, lots of obviously fake blood, bad acting, implausible plots, some gratuitous nudity, and often a horror element.  They were crappy, cheesy movies that were just intended to be FUN.  So.  Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez, two of Hollywood's very best current directors, teamed up to both mock and celebrate the old grindhouse movies.  Each director wrote and directed one short grindhouse-style film, to be released together as a single double-feature style movie.  It comes complete with fake previews for other crappy grindhouse movies (look for the preview for Machete before the first movie starts - it's hysterical!) and an intermission between the films, and intentionally bad quality film with blips and marks all over the screen as though the tape is old and somewhat abused.  The first movie is Rodriguez's movie called Planet Terror.  It's a sort of zombie movie starring Freddy Rodriguez (Rico from Six Feet Under) and Rose McGowan.  It is all action-packed super fun!!  The second movie is Tarantino's movie Death Proof.  It's about a retired stunt man (Kurt Russell) who uses his stunt car (which is death-proof for the driver's seat only) to terrorize girls in his town.  That one also has Rose McGowan in it, as well as Rosario Dawson.  Tarantino himself has very small parts in both movies.  I'm reluctant to give any more details than that because it will just ruin your fun, so that's all you get from me on it!

I highly recommend this if you can go in with a light heart just wanting to have fun at the movies, especially if you just love movies, even fun cheeseball ones.  It is a fabulously great time for that.

the fun cheeseball movies are the best ones. I'm in a Film History class right now, and all we've been watching are old, artsy fartsy foreign films that have something to say, and its getting on my nerves. I watch movies so I can take a break from thinking for a while.

Hell yeah, that is what I want to hear... the last b-movie I've seen involves a ninja fighting against flying fish (literally fish thrown at the main character) that turns into dead enemy ninjas when he stabs them (in fish form).

I will definitely see this with more time...

BTW, Unosuke that is a badass avatar...

Well, I also love artsy foreign films and artsy American films and all sorts of other movies, but I just love movies.  I think that Run Lola Run is fabulous and I love Like Water for Chocolate and all manner of other things, but I'm also crazy for Lone Wolf and Cub movies and Sam Peckinpah and fabulous schlock like GRINDHOUSE, which RULED by the way - did I mention that?  I think I did. ;)

I think I said "This movie is fucking awesome" outloud about 5 times during Planet Terror. Also, the Thanksgiving trailer is one of the most entertaining things I have seen in a long time. However, Death Proof is average, at best. Even for Tarantino. It's quite laggy, but the finale is pretty much the shit.

I recommend Grindhouse quite highly.

I thought Death Proof was pretty rewarding if you like your movies both smart and fun.  It's definitely talky, but it grows on you.  I already saw it twice, and it held up very well on the second viewing; I think I actually appreciated it more, focusing on the dialogue instead of waiting for the "action" to happen.

I had a blast.  3 1/2 hours and I wanted more at the end.  I'd have stuck around for a triple feature if "Thanksgiving" or "Machete" was made into a feature.

I have high hopes for Death Proof , but I am a little bit iffy about Planet Terror. I am extremely excited about seeing both films though!

Robert Rodriguez has announced that he will be doing the Machete movie.  It'll probably go straight to DVD but still, AWESOME.

Planet Terror had the entire theatre going "What the hell?  Oh my GOD! HAHAHAHA"

No shit!!!  That's really, really awesome!!  I will TOTALLY watch that as soon as it is available.

Somebody up above (sorry, now that I'm in the posting page, I don't remember who it was - we nearly-30-year-olds are so old our memories are failing  :-)) expressed that they thought Death Proof was slow or boring or something.  And I've got to be honest, it does kind of feel that way after how crazy and fast-paced Planet of Terror is.  But that's just Tarantino's style - he likes to do the slow build, he likes to spend a lot of time acquainting the audience with the characters so that you care about them before some crazy fucked-up shit happens to them.  But the last half of this movie is JUST as intense and crazy as Planet of Terror was, and the ending totally kicks ass.  So.  Yes, it does slow down the pacing of the experience in the middle of the show, but it's intentional, and there's a big pay-off for it at the end.  Anyway.  That's just my two cents.

I thought it was awesome - my only advice to would-be moviegoers is not to eat anything squishy during Planet Terror - it may gross you out. Save it for Death Proof.

Ya ya. I know about Tarantino's style. But his "slow build" in Death Proof is about twice as bad as it is in his better films like Pulp Fiction and Kill Bill. I still liked Death Proof, but to be honest I didn't care one lick about the characters in Death Proof. I think I actually cared a lot more about Wray and the brothers in Planet Terror, honestly.

I just got back from seeing it.

It was hilarity.  I think that Deathproof was the wittier of the two, actually, because it is totally appropriate for the effect they were going for.  How many plots did they build up in that film just to never capitalize on them?  Like 4?

Planet Terror was a riot.  It is to these B "gore"or movies what The Lost Skeleton of Cadavra is to '50s Sci-fi flicks.

I say it yesterday

I loved Planet Terror as it never seemed to slow down, but I disliked Death Proof cause it was slow as hell and i did not care for the characters in it.  by the end of Death Proof I cared more about what happened to their cheer leader friend that they left at teh farm then seeing Rosario Dawson kick Kurt Russel's head in.

That was the whole point of Deathproof, I think.  Think back to exploitation films of yesteryear.  How often did they throw up 15 different plots only to degrade into mindless stunts with a silly, abrupt ending?

I just like the fact that Grindhouse has given us the best car chase ever filmed.

The movie is absolutely excellent, by the way.  And apparently they're turning Machete into a movie itself.

It's such a shame it made so little money. Grindhouse was awesome in concept alone, when put up onto the big screen it was nothing short of brilliant. You could hear Tarantino and Rodriguez high-fiving each other and giggling like five year olds the entire film.

IMDB informs us that Machete is due out in 2008. I can't wait.

It was definitely a niche movie.  I guess the niche was smaller than anticipated.

It probably didn't help that it opened on Easter weekend, when family fare tends to dominate the box office.

Yeah, Machete is going to be a straight-to-DVD release.  I *believe* they are going to do something similar with the Werewolf Women of the SS thing, too.  I read a little on Wikipedia and rumors abound.

i saw it at the alamo drafthouse. it was surprisingly easy to eat chili cheese fries and pepperoni pizza while watching planet terror.

I'm so jealous. I am seriously thinking about moving to Austin.

I got to see it in a completely empty theater, caught the 11:30am showing on a Wednesday because the theater canceled the showing I tried to catch the night before. I suggest that Grindhouse is either viewed with a large, rowdy crowd, or a small group, single, or up to four persons. It sells the experienced.

actually, Tarantino has mentioned wanting to do a classic "Kung-Fu" movie for the second double feature, entirely in Mandarin, with purposefully shitty subtitling.

I doubt that the poor box office showing will affect either of their desire to make a sequel; Rodriguez had to have made enough off of "Spy Kids" to last him the rest of his life.

I saw it a couple weeks ago in a nearly empty theater.  I really enjoyed it and I hope Tarantino and Rodriguez make another Grindhouse movie.  I hope they make "Don't" and "Thanksgiving" into full feature films.

What I can't figure out is why a family brought thier 3 year-old to see this movie?

It could've been the same people bringing their young'uns to Borat. Although I think Grindhouse is a worse choice, but still. It's called a babysitter. Get one.
