Rage Against the Machine Reunion!
« on: 25 Jan 2007, 09:39 »

Edit: just realised there was already a coachella thread.

so lets just keep this one more about rage and potention albums/tours, and just general love for rage.

http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/news/music/la-et-coachella22jan22,1,6747076.story?track=rss

THEY ARE BACK, yet it seems only for one show.

Seriously, they better be back for good.
I want another album.
And a tour.

Discuss...

On a side note, I can't imagine a festival where its possible to see Bjork, Sonic Youth, Rage and Crowded house.
It would be most excellent.

Unfortunately, there's no possible way I can see the RATM reunion being anything other than disappointing. What's the purpose of it?

Omg!  I've dreamed of this.  I dearly hope it is for longer than just one show.  I never got to see them live, and I live nowhere near L.A.

I know, I've been wanting this ever since I was pretty much dissapointed with Audioslave, they just lacked the intensity of rage.

And hopefully they will realise there is a demand for more than one show, and keep playing forever until it just becomes the same old repetitive thing like we see with bands like the rolling stones.

I don't think anything good can come from them reuiniting. It's not like they made more than one fantastic album, and that was fifteen years ago.

Whatever happened to de la Rocha's solo album, anyway?

In my opinion their first album was overshadowed musically and lyrically (basically overall) by their other two albums, especially Battle of Los Angeles.

His album was never completed, but he did get a track done with DJ Shadow, and had another song on the Farenheit 9/11 soundtrack.
He's also featured with some other artists, but I forget who.

I disagree. I found Evil Empire to be totally boring outside of a few (admittedly, great) songs. LA is a great record, but it's not up to the first record's level.

Renegades is underrated though.

I can't imagine what he's been doing with all this time. He's not exactly been in the public eye either. I wonder if he's been concerned with family matters.

I allways imagined him fighting capitalist pigs in some jungle in South America.

Some how, I wish that was true.

I said "it's for the money" to a fan and his response was "dude, it's just for one show." Yeah, I'll believe that when I see it.

argh, I can't afford to go to LA!

And personally I think renegades is their best album, they just don't have that kind of versatility on any of the others.

You mean the album that they didn't write any of the songs for? With the good songs that Rick Rubin had to coax them into covering?

Yeah, thats pretty dang versatile.

Yeah, if by versatile you mean hit-and-miss.

I mean they raped 'Kick Out The Jams.' Sometimes I wish Morello would just play a normal guitar solo.

'Sleep Now in the Fire' is OK.

Heh.  Truly, that is a good song.  I have to say that Zach's lyrics in the first album were way obtuse.  They got better, but they were always a touch too anthemic.

I find it interesting that this boards overwhelming opinion of RATM is positive, whilst the opinion on SOAD is overwhelmingly negative.

Why is that?

The first time I heard "fuck you I won't do whatcha tell me!!!!!" was in a club in Orlando in '93 or '94 and I bust out laughing because he sounded like Adam Sandler.

I think the RATM reunion is overshadowing the fact that fucking JAMC are reuniting at Coachella.

That's the bit I don't understand. Questionable dress sense aside, RATM are far more nu-metal than SOAD.

I think it's the fanbase.  Rage fans generally at least pretended to care about shit like Tibet.  They are the Nirvana to SOAD's Pearl Jam.

I think that is wrong.  Rage are very un-nu metal.  First off, they derive a lot of stuff from funk and rap, and secondly. . . well, I think that's all that needs to be said.

However, I like both bands.  I remember I started a topic a month back or so asking people what they thought of SOAD.  The response, I believe, was that I slight majority liked them or had no problem with them.

The inclusion of rap has always been one of the hall-marks of nu-metal for me. I admit Rage Against the Machine don't obviously horrifically suck like, say, Linkin Park, but they ain't TROO METUHL.

And I don't know about the fandom. I remember when I first got into SOAD (yeeears ago now) it really politicised me and my friends. I remember when the video for BOOM came out before Iraq. I was already liberal as hell (I blame my parents letting me read all those Ursula K. LeGuin books) but hey...

I first heard SOAD on a Kerrang sampler cd, I got given it at a concert or something that was sponsered by them...

Interestingly enough that cd also had Opeth and The Mark of Cain on it...

edit: found a link to it ah memories...

You must be thinking of the word "obscure."

obtuse: not sharp, acute, or pointed; blunt in form.

Actually that 'Maggie's Farm' cover is one of my favourite Rage tunes. And out of the three or four versions of it I've heard by Bob Dylan, I prefer it to about two of them.

Seriously, what do they teach you kids at MTV these days?

well I've never liked Beautiful world anyway and Maggies farm is actually my favourite song from the album. And I haven't watched MTV since I gots me sum internets.

I'd say that it's mainly because RATM never got unfairly lumped in with nu-metal like SOAD.

They didn't? As someone who was regrettably part of the nu-metal scene at a certain point in time, I can say with complete certainty that they totally were lumped in with nu-metal.

Also, seriously, what's with the hate for Audioslave? They don't compare to Rage OR Soundgarden, but they're not horrible. Their first album was good and their second and third were decent with some good tunes. (They keep choosing horrible singles, though)

word, although the press release that satid they were going to put out one album a year kind of worries me. Feels like they'll fill every album with half-arsed songs just to make the deadline : /

Well, chris cornell quit Audioslave.  He has a solo album coming out, his last was awesome so I except this one to be awesome.  Hopefully Rage can get shit together and become a band again.  I would love to see them do something now, there is so much going on politically that I can't see them not doing something.
