They're great live.

Would be nice if they would do a decent-sized tour of North America though. And look at that tour: it'll be at least six months before that happens, let alone an Aussie jaunt. Sorry, Inlander. On the plus side I hear you can get cheaper flights from Australia to the U.S. if you book early.

I have to say, I'm rather disappointed by the poor amount of Canadian tour dates, I was really hoping they'd swing through here over the next while.  I could go down to Portland if I really wanted to, but that seems a bit much work.

The more I look at this schedule, the more it irritates the hell out of me. Seriously, guys. The Odeon was sold out last time. You're guaranteed a crowd. Do a proper tour.

Exactly.  They sold out the Forum when they came to Vancouver, and I have no doubts that they could sell out a three night run there if they wanted to, or even do a bigger venue if need be.  I'm hoping they'll do a proper summer tour, but chances are I'll be stuck working at a summer camp for that, which will interefer a tad with being in the city.

I got a ticket to see them in the Olymipa in Ireland. I was 5th in queue with 4 friends. 2 ticket limit and by the time I reached counter all that was left was 2nd day seating, and it cost a 62Euro- which is a shit lot for a gig- I know about supply and demand, but it still seems like they are exploiting fans, especially in Ireland where big-decent band gig dates are no where near as frequent as America or Britain.   If only I had my own private jet....

62 Euros?! That's obscene. I can't think of another word for it. I mean, I thought it was bad when Belle & Sebastian came to Australia last year and the tickets were A$70-something, but . . . Gees, Arcade Fire, you just lost quite a lot of respect from me.

Does the ticket pricing actually fall directly upon the band though?  Does it not have something to do with the people who do the booking, own the venue, things of that nature?

Ticket prices are determined via augury and hepatomancy once a year during the Lupercalia.

It is true.

I guess with eight people in a band your tour expenses go up considerably.

I saw Broken Social Scene last year for around A$50.

Does the ticket pricing actually fall directly upon the band though?  Does it not have something to do with the people who do the booking, own the venue, things of that nature?

The band can do something about it if they want: witness Pearl Jam's stance on ticket prices for their gigs some years ago.

Hm. Last time I saw them the ticket prices were only thirty bucks.

I guess trans-Atlantic travel is a lot pricier than it used to be.

They were $25 (Canadian) when I saw them, if I recall correctly.

Yeah I think that's how much it was.
Wonderful show.
I'm here to tell everyone that if you like this band even a little bit you have got to see them live. It's a wonderful experience. Completely changed my opinion of them.

Well they are really good but if I have to put forward a hundred dollars to see them, I'm not going. For thirty dollars less I can see Black Sabbath fronted by Dio, with Megadeth opening, and I can't afford that.

Even cars.

As it turns out their new album is good!

I really like the new album.  More than Funeral even.  I think.  Not sure how well it'll all translate live in comparison to the first album, but on record, I've found it a much better listen, at least in the moods I've been in lately.  "My Body Is A Cage" may be my favourite Arcade Fire song.

I don't know, man.  Acid Mothers Temple are from Japan, so it can't be cheap for them to tour in America, but they're playing small venues and the place I'm planning on seeing them, the show is only $10.

When Broken Social Scene played here a few months ago, tickets were $20 American, and they have like, nine thousand people in the band.

Im pretty miffed alright... the price could also be because Ticketmaster have acomplete monopoly on ticket sales for even mildely poular bands in Ireland- they literally ride you purple

the most i've ever paid for a show was $50 to see sigur ros at the theater at madison square garden. i'm still not sure if it was truly worth it even if it was a wonderful show. i'm hoping the arcade fire shows around here aren't over 30 but based on what you guys have been saying i'm pretty worried they will be. to agree with zerodrone, it can't be a distance thing. when i saw mono (also from japan) the tickets were $15 i think. and they're playing in Philly in may and the show's only $10. who ever is responsible for high arcade fire ticket prices has earned my scorn and indignation. unless it's the arcade fire. i like them too much to be mad at them.

I think alot of the things to do with ticket pricing ect are to do with the record company and tour managers, the band just plays and everyone else sorts it all out.
At least thats what I think, from what I learned about the music industry at college.

Noyce, they're playing Brixton!

I'm also (hopefully) seeing Muse at Bestival this year. Yay!

But I love Tunnels *hums*

Tunnels is great but Power Out is far better. And they sadly don't often play it live. They haven't played it once on the current tour if memory serves me correctly. I'm just hoping they'll play it at one of the shows I'm going to. In fact, I'm going to listen to that song right now.

The most I paid for a concert ever that wasn't a festival was REM with Radiohead opening in '95 and it was only $30 and we were like six rows from the stage in a giant amphitheater.  I think the lawn seats were only like $20.

Feel free to be jealous of me for seeing Radiohead before OK Computer broke now.

No one's recommended Islands? I've only ever heard them live, and only once as an opener for Metric, but I'm fairly sure they'd be agreeable to an Arcade Fire fan. Architecture in Helsinki, though they have a fairly different 'sound' there are funny similarities in their song writing, and when I listen to The Arcade Fire, I find myself wanting to listen to Architecture in Helsinki later.
You could try last fm for similar artists, but that system isn't exactly perfect. You will at least find some good sounding stuff, and if you look a little farther into the lists you may find something you like more.

Ticket prices are gross, but they can charge them, and big venues cost lots of money, if only due to the fact that whoever owns those massive concert halls can make more money off of someone who is willing to gouge. When you get big, that's the way it is. I doubt I'll ever see them live again unless it's a decent price and/or an awesome venue.

Have I told my story of that one festival two years ago that I like to talk about a lot? The time when, after a day of amazing bands I won't list, they came out and did a spectacular set, rocked out to an insane degree, with me close enough to the stage to actually hear the helmets the dude was bashing on. And then at 11:00 when the law said they had to shut down, they started playing "Wake Up", then one by one, hopped off of the stage, instruments in hand, and marched all around the park in a dozen different interweaving chains of concert-goers, chanting the recurring 'ohhhs' over and over.
Brilliant. Though I do talk about that weekend far too much, even two years later.

I don't really think there's that many similarities in sound between Islands and the Arcade Fire, though both put on an incredible live show and make rather excellent music.  Still, well worth checking Islands out.

I can't put my finger on anything that ties Islands to the Arcade Fire, but they're also of the Montreal music scene, so there are some similarities. You might also like Kill the Lights, another band that's spent some serious time in Montreal. I think I can hear that the same scene had influences on the Arcade Fire and Kill the Lights, but I may be reading too much into the sounds. I did think they were from Montreal when I first heard them, so there may be something there.

P.S. After looking at audioscrobbler, I am pleased to notice that I am one of the top three listeners of Kill the Lights, and the person who has listened to the most Kill the Lights has just listened to a bunch of Arcade Fire.
