Ok, well, that was constructive...

[*]Genuine Windows Vista? Business (32-bit)
[*]Microsoft? Office Small Business Edition 2003 (Basic + PowerPoint & Publisher)

[*]17.1" WUXGA TFT Active Matrix (1920 x 1200 max. resolution)
[*]100GB 7200rpm Serial ATA hard drive

Vaio's have always been a little bit out of my price range (and by a little bit, I mean a lot.) All I know is that I got my little Compaq Presario last year for just over $600 and it does everything I've asked it to do so far except run San Andreas well.  The Vaio's sure do look pretty though...

I'd pick that over the Sony, but only because it's cheaper.  Truth is, if you want one that's going to last, you gotta cough it up.  Most Dell's have the absolutely shittiest insides in a name-brand PC I've ever seen, but then their XPS lines offer things like water-cooling  (not in their laptops.  most laptops have cramped innards, as a rule).  If you do decide to get the gateway, you might wanna throw in an extra sixty bucks or so and get one of those chill pads you stick on the bottom to keep it from overheating, just to be safe.

I checked out Toshiba, but the website doesn't allow customizing. I'm not buying a Dell - everything my family has bought has been a Dell and they're fraught with problems.

Here's a Compaq:

[*]Intel(R) Core(TM) 2 Duo T7200 (2.0GHz/4MB L2Cache)
[*]Windows Vista Business
[*]17.0" WSXGA+ BrightView Widescreen (1680x1050)
[*]256MB NVIDIA(R) GeForce(R) Go 7600
[*]2048MB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm)
[*]120GB 5400RPM SATA
[*]LightScribe Super Multi 8X DVD+/-RW w/Double Layer
[*]Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network w/Bluetooth
[*]High Capacity 8 Cell Lithium Ion Battery
[*]Microsoft(R) Office Small Business 2007
[*]Norton Internet Security(TM) 2007 - 15 Months
[*]1-year HP Accidental Damage Protection with Express Repair extended service plan

All that for $2,107 w/ 12 months no interest, no payments.

mberan42:
Sorry for the double post, but I want to sum up the three lappy's pros and cons.

Pros

Sony:
[*]Looks awesome
[*]Great brand reputation
[*]Longest standard anti-virus subscription

Gateway:
[*]Highest screen resolution of the three
[*]Fastest Hard Drive

Compaq:
[*]Cheapest
[*]LightScribe burner
[*]Cheap high-capacity battery
[*]Great warranty / service plan

Cons

Sony:
[*]Buttfucking expensive
[*]Slowest processor

Gateway:
[*]They sit wrong with me. I couldn't tell you what it is, but they just don't seem reputable.
[*]Smallest HDD size
[*]Ugly

Compaq:
[*]Smallest screen resolution
[*]Ugly

Anybody have anything else to say about this? I'd love to have the Sony, but I'm probably going to go with the Compaq, unless people think otherwise.

Thanks, as always, for the help.
