FF Chronicles w/ chrono trigger

Has anyone played this version of Chrono Trigger?  Is it worth it?  There are a ton of copies on ebay for $10 or less and seeing as how I've never played Chrono Trigger but always wanted to, I'm thinking about getting a copy.

I'd nab it. The game is fucking amazing and well worth that.

If you ever play the SNES cart or the eventual VC/GBA release, you'll never wanna play the Chronicles version again though.

I would agree.  This game is generally regarded as a landmark of the 16-bit generation, and for good reason.  I haven't played the Chronicles version and can't speak to the system differences but the game itself is excellent.  I won't say anything else for the sake of spoilers.

Yeah, I'd nab it. I got it for twenty bucks one time and it was twenty dollars well-spent. The main problem with the version of Chrono Trigger that's on there is the ungodly loading times during every goddamn battle.

Yeah, but even a relatively old computer can emulate the Chronicles version and take the load times right out. 2xSaI filtering, too. More ethical than an SNES emu.

Ethics, smethics. Emulate the bitch. I hated the Playstation re-release of Chrono Trigger. It's got annoying slowdown and menus take way too long to load for such a simple game.

Not to mention the version of Final Fantasy 6 for the Playstation was utterly jacked.

I'd say emulate it, or if you have some moral issues with that or don't want to risk downloading from sites that might be untrustworthy, wait for a DS port or VC release.

Provided you have a Wii or a DS, of course.

Hmm.  I have a DS so I may just wait for it given the feedback.

I pretty much hate emulators because they don't give me that same console gaming feel.  Yeah yeah I know, its dumb but it is the truth.

That's why I want to get a usb SNES-looking controller.
When I get my hands on that, watch out ROM-sites!

More ethical than an SNES emu.

What? At least they still manufactured PS1 games up until very recently.

It's exactly the same, except with more lag.

I kept it because I realized I could sell the SNES Chrono Trigger for like $40.

The menu load times are a bit of a bitch, but the game is fantastic, that's probably the cheapest copy you can find outside of emulating, you get the anime cut-scenes, AND you get FFIV, up there with the best of that series.

I have the PS1 Chrono Trigger, and I love it. The only problem is the load times, but that can be overlooked, at least in my mind.

The anime cutscenes are nice (and give a bit more insight on the events after the game's official ending), and it has (all unlockable) a jukebox, a beastiary, a treasure box list (if I am not mistaken), and an endings list, if not other things (my memory fails me at the moment).

Plus, it comes with Final Fantasy IV, and although I have yet to play it (due to current PS2 troubles), I hear it is a damn fine game.

Then again, you could always emulate. But if you want the console experience, I recommend getting it. If you are a Chrono fan, I don't think you'll regret it.

And while you're at it, pick up Chrono Cross. My favourite RPG to date, and who knows, it may tickle your fancy as well.

I absolutely could NOT get over the load times in that version.  They're horrible.

Unless it gets re-released I don't see the ethical problem with emulating it - buying it used won't give any more money to the makers and publishers of the game than emulating it would.  Kind of like downloading an album that's out of print.

Load times on the Chronicles version are horrific if you've played another version. Since you haven't, I'd say you could probably enjoy it if you're a fairly patient person. I lucked out and got the SNES version for $20 when I was five. I didn't know it was rare until my cousin saw my copy a couple years later and wet himself.
