Just read that Nigel Godrich, producer of lots of good stuff, is starting an online, downloadable show called From The Basement.  He's basically calling in his buddies / past clients to do live performances and recording it all on tape.

First show is Thom Yorke doing a couple of Radiohead songs from the upcoming album, some White Stripes, and Kieran Hebden (Four Tet) and Steve Reid having a jam.  So my subject line isn't a lie, it's just "encouraging readers".   

Pretty interesting concept, I reckon.

Can't say the line-up of the first show interests me much, but he's getting Jamie Lidell on next episode supposedly, which would be hot garbage!

Kinda funny that in the article I've linked to Jack White praises the sound of the show (being recorded on analogue tape) when the whole thing's going to be compressed so it can be put online anyway.

The two sessions they recorded together and released, The Exchange Sessions vol. 1 & 2, are just awe inspiring. Seriously, just wow.

Did you see those guys do their thing live?  Predictably (since the CDs are just recorded performances) just as good as the albums.

"Down is the New Up" is pretty bad.  It's like a bad sequel to "Pyramid Song" (which is my favorite Radiohead tune).

Seriously, the lyrics too.  "What is up, buttercup / down is the new up"?  Come on.  "Your future's bleak / you're so last week".  Yes, Thom.  Indeed.  "Ladies and gentlemen, without a safety net / I will now perform a 180 flip flop".  Christ, it's like he wrote them on a bar napkin after six pints thinking "Oh, man, these are some hot lyrics".

And then in the morning forgot to remember they're terrible.

It's pissing me off that the band who did OK Computer and Amnesiac - two of the best albums of all time - seems to keep getting worse.  Hail to the Thief was inexcusably boring and all the new songs I've heard are inexcusably annoying.

(I did kind of like The Eraser, strangely enough.)

I have to agree. I do indeed think zerodrone is off the mark here. I liked Hail to the Thief a very large amount. Sure, some of the songs weren't amazing, but not every song can be 'The National Anthem.' HttT had lots of great songs: 'backdrifts' 'Wolf at the Door' 'Scatterbrain' 'Myxomatosis' and 'A Punchup at a Wedding' to name just a few. Sure it had the dreadful 'We Suck Young Blood' and the slightly boring 'Gloaming' along with a couple other non-standouts but as a whole the album has a nice cohesivness, good lyrics, a wide range of styles on display, and a whole lot of plain good songwriting.

Now the Eraser is an album I simply do not like. I find it boring and unimpressive. Thom Yorke needs Radiohead. Eraser convinced me of this. After all the praise I heard heaped on the album, I finally gave it a listen and was shocked. It was boring and kinda 'meh' at best. I was sure I was missing something so I listened a few more times. Sadly my opinion remained unchanged. There's something about that album that just feels off. It's just not good.

FInally I've only heard the new song linked on this thread but I really liked it. The lyrics aren't fantastic but Thom's voice is great as always and I love piano in general so it seemed pretty good to me. I'm really excited to hear more of the new album.

I hate talking about Radiohead because they're one of those bands that people think there is a "right" opinion on.  It is not a "fact" that Hail to the Thief is good.  "The National Anthem" is not one of my favorite Radiohead songs.  I like Amnesiac more than Kid A and OK Computer.  My opinions aren't "wrong".  I know a lot of people who thought HttT was a very boring album.

I don't know what it is about this band that makes people get so defensive every time anybody criticizes them.

woah woah woah, slow down buddy. No one said you were wrong. My exact words were "I think Zerodrone is off the mark here." emphasis on "I think." That seems to me to imply an opinionated statement based upon formed ideas, not a statement of fact. I too prefer Amnesiac. In fact I i think it's their best album. My post, exactly as your post to which it was a response, is pretty much what I feel about the band. I don't think my post was at all defensive. Your response, however, most certainly was. Basically, you should avoid criticisizing something while simeoultaneously displaying perfectly what it is your criticisizing. I don't want to get into an argument over this and I'm not going to post anymore on the subject but I just wanted to point out that not only are your criticisms unfounded but they're also kinda laughable hypocritical.

I have to say that the "you're so last week" bit is pretty cringe-worthy, and not because it's by Thom Yorke but rather because it's just a bad line. I hope the new record is good. Hail had some stellar tracks but also some absolutely terrible songs. The Eraser is a really smart, atmospheric record. Those are my opinions on all of this topic.

From what I've heard so far the show's going to be free from advertising and sponsors too.. the whole thing seems like a pretty interesting endeavour, wrt a new way to present a live show, instead of just chucking it on the telly.  OK, it's not bleeding edge, but to the best of my knowledge it's never been done before, especially not with some big names involved.

I just think that only Radiohead could have people seriously defending a lyric like "What is up, buttercup / down is the new up".  It sounds like a line from a Pepsi commercial.

Like, idk, Fountains Of Wayne for example.
