I am just starting to listen to "indie music" I have cut my teeth with Sigur Ros, Explosions in the Sky, Silversun Pick-ups, Arcade Fire and a Reducation when it comes to Modest Mouse.

I was specifically looking for a good album from Pavement to wet my appetite with.

All Pavement albums are good Pavement albums. Particularly popular, though, are their first two: Slanted & Enchanted and Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain. They are good places to start.

I'm going to recommend The New Pornographers. I'd probably recommend starting with Mass Romantic, though all of their albums are worth listening to.

wow, indie....most of my indie stuff is the electronica/post-punk stuff but ill throw out my favs id recommend

LadyTron - fav indie band evar. All three albums are good but their latest pales to compare with their others.
Massive Attack - fan-freaking-amazing electronica
Black Rebel Mototcycle club - overly distorted post-punk that sounds straight from the heart of Brooklyn
Stars - the most heavenly sounding music i own, amazing vocals
Alpinestars - Snow...patrol....save....your soul
Spoon - just perfect amounts of serious and non-serious
Wilco - grab their live album blow you away

If you like Sigur Ros, you may like Under Byen (pronounced "Oon'ah Boon"), a really excellent band from Holland. Haunting vocals (they sound haunting anyway. I don't speak Dutch so they could be saying anything) and great instrumentation make these guys (well, one guy. The rest of the band is girls) well worth checking out.

I can't belive this forum sometimes, surely if he's just getting into indie he needs the basics first,

The Smiths, The Queen Is Dead
Oasis, Definitely Maybe
The Stone Roses, The Stone Roses, Or get their Best Of
Joy Division, just get their Best Of

I think most modern indie bands would at least cite one of the above as an influence.

All the bands everyone else has suggested are great suggestions, it's just I thought it's best to start with the basics and move on up.

Woah, you're right. My mistake. I always confuse those two because Danish and Dutch both star with the letter 'D' and...well yeah. My mistake. I've only heard their newest album but if it's any indication of thier older stuff, it's all really amazing. I've been listening to that album almost daily for several weeks now.

Oasis are neither indie nor good.

If you want a serious Pavement album, go for Wowee Zowee. They just reissued it in a 2 disc deluxe edition that has pretty much everything they recorded around that time, along with some live stuff.

Well I have managed to listen to a few of the recommendations but seeing that it is a large quantity of music being recommended its gonna take a while to get through even a good amount of it to come back with some kind of commentary. As of yet, I love Arcade Fire, Mogwai, Pavement, Broken Social Scene and I especially love Blonde Redhead. Will continue taking recommendations and expanding my musical tastes.

Also, as far as pavement goes, Brighten the Corners is the most instantly catchy pavement album, easily the most accessible. Start here.

Wowee Zowee the most varied. It's also the hardest album to get into, but has some of the best work they ever did.

Terror Twilight was super mellow and fun to listen to. This is the 'pleasant' album that isn't too intrusive, throw it on when you have friends over, they'll like it.

If you want to get into pavement, don't get the 'extended' versions of the albums. They'll just overwhelm you and make it much harder to get through the albums.

Also, as a general rule, if it's british and it's in this music forum, it's shit. The exceptions are bands from Scotland.

I don't think it's possible to find the non-extended editions of Pavement albums before Brighten The Corners. But hey, if you want to get the album first, decide you want everything by Pavement, and then shell out for the deluxe edition, you go right ahead. I don't have money to burn and I'd rather just get everything up front.

If you want to just hear the album first, there's a handy feature in most modern music playing software and hardware that lets you program a tracklist.

edit the info for the actual album tracks so that the word "Original" or something is in the title
search for that under iTunes
listen to the album as it was meant to be listened to!

To tell the truth, once you've got a good handle on the band then listening to the full extended versions provides a great appreciation for the development of each Pavement album.

Oh and you should probably grab Sondre Lerche's latest album, Phantom Punch, if you're into poppy stuff.

I finally managed to find a link to download that Det Er Mig... CD and I gotta say, if you haven't gotten the newest one yet, DO IT. Det Er Mig... is very good but 'Samme Stof Som Stof' is much better in my opinion.

Another recommendation: The awfully named Rock Plaza Central have a very excellent indie rock album called "Are We Not Horses?" that any fan of most of the bands listed here would probably like.

Generally most 'popular' british music IS trash. Exceptions being 65daysofstatic, Beth Orton, Elastica, Imogen Heap / Frou Frou, Kate Rusby, Kenickie, Oceansize...
I GENUINELY loved Busted, and Fightstar are ok.

One of my favourite albums of all time is by a almost totally unknkown band called Hopper, it was released around '96. Female fronted sputtery indie guitar rock-pop, it has a really nice sound to it. I'd be willing to share it if anyone's interested.

But yeah, there's something about those scots: bis, mogwai, teenage fanclub, ivor cutler... man.

I'm pretty sure The Beatles have been mentioned a few times on this forum. Besides this isn't pop we're on about, but Indie, and I thought the bands I suggested were perfectly credible Indie bands (barring Oasis, if you are talking about their later stuff), but obviously not. I really don't understand why there's so much hate for English music on here, I can understand you hating pop because, after all, you have your Indie cred to worry about, but Joy division are Indie legends and The Smiths basically are the definition of Indie. It would be easy for me to pick a few shit US bands and then use them to slate off the whole of Americas' music scene, but I don't, because that would be stupid.

I'd like to add Pulp to my list of reccomendations.

Oh and Wezzand, Fightstar and Busted? Please, I just ate lunch.

Hmm, I used to really really like 65daysofstatic, but I have really soured on them as of late. At first I really liked the energy of their songs, but then I realized that most of the songs sound really similar, and they aren't honestly that experimental. However, reading their wikipedia article did get me interested in Math Rock (even though they aren't truly Math Rock, more of a mathy post-rock or mathy glitchy indie band), so I suppose some good did come from listening to them.
