Songs of Joy
« on: 15 Feb 2007, 23:59 »

Going through my music looking for something to cheer me up today and I realised that the track Alibi by the Mountain Goats (off the Babylon Springs EP) never fails to make me smile. There's just something mischeivous and very nothing's-ever-gonna-go-wrong about the lyrics and the delivery that just makes me think, 'dammit, nothing is ever gonna go wrong.'
The Mountain Goats - Alibi

What songs always make you happy?
(note: this thread is useless without files or youtube links or whatever).

I made a mix of these songs. It went something like this:

"Particle Man" - They Might Be Giants
"Ob-Li-Di, Ob-La-Da" - The Beatles
"Raison d'etre" - (The Chobits Soundtrack)
"Cats On Mars" - Yoko Kanno
"Hangin' Around" - The Polyphonic Spree
"We Have A Theme Song" - The Pillows
"Weapon of Choice" - Fatboy Slim
"The Electric Version" - The New Pornographers
"We're From Barcelona" - I'm From Barcelona
"Four Brothers" - The Manhattan Transfer
"O My Soul" - Big Star
"Iko Iko" - Dr. John
"Shadow Stabbing" - Cake
"Marry You" - Eric Clapton & B.B. King
"Sexx Laws" - Beck
"Super Rad!" - The Aquabats

A semi could run over my grandmother and after listening to this mix, life would be great.

The Gummi Bears theme song

I have that in my head now, thanks. I love the very end note-they are the Gummi BEARS!

Though the Fraggle Rock theme song, to me, is way happier and makes-me-smile-ish. Also, the old guy in the beginning is not only Doc from the show, but Doc from Boondock Saints, as well.

Hank Williams-Tear in my Beer (mine and my grandpa's song)

"Prom Night At Hater High" by The Long Winters.
"I'll Believe In Anything" by Wolf Parade.
"3000 Flowers" by Destroyer.
"Black" by Okkervil River. I know it's not exactly a cheerful song but bellowing along to it makes me grin.

Hearing the multi-layered guitar madness in Arsis's A Diamond for Disease break into a fucking amazing riff at around the 2:30 mark is one of the most bizarrely enjoyable experiences I've ever had in music. I always end up grinning like an idiot at that. And it's friggin' death metal.

both are quite excellent. though my drama director hated the gummi bears theme song, but it was really funny because a few of us knew the rockapella version of it and would sing it to drive her crazy. twas excellent.

any of the songs from animaniacs also get me to smile.

Mainly soul, funk and disco stuff makes me get the giant grins...

I Get Lifted by George Mcrae
I Wanna Be Your Lover by Prince
Just Kissed My Baby by The Meters
Peanut Butter by Gwen Guthrie
P-Funk (Wants To Get Funked Up) by Parliament
Casual Friday by Black Leotard Front (OK, it's contemporary DFA stuff, but decent avant-disco action I reckon)

and also some nostalgia, 80s hits from my childhood:

We Belong by Pat Benatar
Wouldn't It Be Good by Nik Kershaw
Party All The Time by Eddie Murphy
You Can Do Magic by America
Left To My Own Devices by Pet Shop Boys

Obviously a lot of stuff I listen to makes me happy, but this is break-out-the-grins material.

Oh yeah, the first 4 tracks of 'Discovery' do it for me.  When it first came out I was a bit more of a po-faced techno nerd than I am now, and I thought stuff like One More Time was much too cheesy.  Then one time I was listening and it hit that far too long breakdown and I was like "oh shit, they really mean it..." and got goose bumps... never looked back.  Not to mention the ridiculous over-the-top compression on the vox.  "TonightAH"

Black Sabbath - A National Acrobat

When the riff changes at a bout the 5 min mark, the new riff is one of the happiest sounding things I've ever heard, brings a smile to my face.

Also "She's a Maniac" from Flashdance cracks me up everytime.

One More Time always makes me giggle. Cheesy is the best word to describe it, in the most wonderful way possible. You can't look at the album (especially the non-instrumental tracks) sternly, or else you'll write the entire thing off as crap.

On a similar note to the Daft Punk: Cut Copy. Bright Like Neon Love is just awesome disco fun. They've got a new album coming out any weeks now and the first single off that is just great. Great like leg warmers.

[edit]I just found this: http://www.abc.net.au/triplej/music_specials/s1402002.htm
I so wish I caught that when it was on air. (If anyone's i dunno, taped it on cassette over something like a fleetwood mac album and they wouldn't mind digging out, dusting off and posting it in my direction it'd be the most awesome thing ever. No hyperbole.)

Here's the music video for "Can't Look Down" by Zox

They're a pretty cool band.  They use an electric violin instead of a lead guitar.  It gives them this really unique sound.  I think it does anyways.

Not exactly a song of joy - but if you're going through a rough patch then "This is the Sea" by the Waterboys is pretty much guaranteed to make you see things in a new light, and possibly re-evaluate your priorities.

I really have to get a copy of Gravity Won't Get You High. I think I've heard the whole thing over several trips in a friends car and each and every time it's made me happy. And I have some great memories in and around those car trips. Despite me never owning the album or hearing it in full it's definately a major part of the soundtrack to one of the best parts of my life.

Also: http://hypem.com/search/the%20grates/1/, Lies is on that page, also Inside Outside. But really, Lies is the track that stands out.

Don't forget links people! No-one reads lists.

"Umbrellas & Elephants" by Cinematic Sunrise always makes me happy on rainy days.

Quote
let's go, dance around in the rain,
don't pay attention to the people staring from inside,
we'll leave all our cares behind,
and you can hear the

pitter patter on the rooftop,
you can listen to,
the rhythm of the raindrops,
I wish that the sun would come and stay,
but this is a song for rainy days.

Kind of cheesy, but it makes me happy, because i'm a romantic.
