Go buy Carcass' "Heartwork", and I'm pretty sure you'll never listen to In Flames again.

Otherwise, check out Arsis. For the love of god, CHECK OUT ARSIS!!!

And Death. Death kick fuckin' ass.

I suggest you use this to refine what you're asking for. Metal is a great genre, but there's a lot of variation. I go mainly for power metal myself (operatic vocals, dragons, and elves, heh) but there's a ton of good stuff in every subgenre.

FYI, In Flames would probably be considered Melodic Death, though their more recent albums have more electronic influences, so death my not claim them as readily these days.

I'd say there recent output was Nu Metal...

Since you listed Slayer a Thrash band an In Flames Melodic Death

I'll recocmend some melodic thrash

Check out The Haunted, especially their Album "Made me Do it" and the last At The Gates album "Slaughter of the Soul" both of those are nice and melodic with decent enough thrash riffs.

I don't really listen to very much metal, but from bits and pieces I've heard and bought and gotten into I'd say Electric Wizard, Earth, Sunn o))), Boris. No idea if that's vaguely what you're after, but I like the doomier stuff.

Dark Tranquillity. Everything by Dark Tranquillity. And get the song 'Unas, Slayer Of The Gods' by Nile for jokes. I'm not too sure on the rest of their material yet but that one is epic.

Meshuggah
Opeth
Agalloch
Isis
Biomechanical
Scar Symmetry
At the Gates
Nile

Some of those have more death-metal elements than others (actually, I'd never call Agalloch a death-metal band, but they do have some "harsh" vocals. They're awesome anyway).

iTunes has an "indie spotlight" on metal, and most of it sounds decent through the samples.

Some of it is barely metal, but hey.

get "prowler in the yard" by pig destroyer, the best grindcore i ever heard. and for the love of god don't go near any berzerker record!! it's very weak and very sad because their label (actually it's one guy and he uses a drum machine) said this was the most extreme band in the world... it sounds like a retarded alien grunting and banging on a tin can with a metal spoon.. sooooo pathetic..
be sure to read the pig destroyer lyrics.. the guy gets away with talking about horror&guts&gore and being poetic at the same time lollololol

arch enemy - doomsday machine
bolt thrower - those once loyal
dark tranquility - fiction (not released yet)
strapping young lad - alien
the project hate mcmxcix - armageddon march eternal: symphonies of slit wrists

arch enemy and dark tranquility sound a lot like in flames. this is more true with dark tranquility. they seem to have better production than in flames.
bolt thrower is like slayer, but less thrash, more death.
syl is different.
tph is a mix of a bunch of styles. one of the vocalists is the best death metal vocalist i have heard.

Heh are you talking about the Australain Death/Grind band "The Bezerker"

They do use a drummer he just plays so fast it sounds like a drum machine, apparently they measured him at 19 beats per second, which is insane...

I saw them live once, absolutely crazy, but yeah it's like a fair bit of other grind you really have to be in a certain mood to listen to them. Their concerts are great though, kind of like Blood-Duster, shitty on records but great live.

If you want doomier stuff try Pentagram, Sun O))), Bedemon, Cathedral.
Im surprised no-one has recommended more traditional metal yet. Try some Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Ozzy Osbourne, Dio. Early Man are also good and even once got a mention in one of the comics. Also listen to some Black Sabbath, I don't really consider it metal more hard rock but awesome nonetheless.

If you don't think 'No One Wins' by Berzerker is a bad-ass song, I'm not sure I want to be your friend.

Sorry :(

I'd also like to point out that The Berzerker is an industrial death metal band and that they have five members.

Also, Pig Destroyers new stuff is good but kinda commercial (if grindcore can be commercial...). That said, I'd probably take Terrifyer over Prowler in the Yard. My personal favourite grind release is 'Perfect Collection. Original Sound Version' by Discordance axis, followed up by Napalm Deaths all time classic 'Scum' (YOU SUFFER, BUT WHY?) and then Circle of Dead Childrens 'Human Harvest', though I am far from an expert on grindcore.

Khar and others have you heard much Cephalic Carnage, they used to be the really 'hyped up' grind band everyone was talking about years ago AFAIK they just dropped off the face of the planet.

I personally think Harmony Corruption is the best Napalm Death album, I love Lee Dorian but HC just kills.

Also on grind the early Carcass albums, especially "Symphonies of Sickness" are fucking awesome. In fact every album Carcass released was killer.

I would say Mithotyn, regardless of the fact that they're not really like In Flames or Slayer (from what of heard of those two, Mithotyn is much better. Viking metal, with enough death to keep you interested)

I can't really add anything else that no-one else has said, but i will say that Dark Tranquillity and Arch Enemy are must listens

Seconded.

Also, Blind Guardian are power metal, but depending on the album, badass, skull-splitting, blood-drinking power metal.

If you like Slayer (thrash metal), then Testament and Megadeth should set you right. Iced Earth are also power metal, but very thrashy power metal. SuiAkrA rock (www.myspace.com/suidAkrA) as well, melodic black death metal.

Hmm if you like Suidarkra you'll probablly dig Primordial.

"Somewhere Far Beyond" is the best Blind Gaurdian album imo, some killer songs on that album , "Ashes to Ashes", "Quest for Tanelorn",  "Journey Through the Dark" etc, very good riffs and the production is amazing, just raw enough that it's still listenable.

Personally my favourite album of theirs was "The New Order".

I can see why some might not like Testament (I didn't at first) but when it comes down to it, I think they stack up as a major thrash band, if not commericially then musically.

The thing is, Testament has reinvented themselves musically about 4 times and done it very well each time. I suppose that not every style would appeal to everyone, but I personally enjoy just about every phase of their career.

here's me being techinical again all albums except for the second one use a drum machine on the album however when they play live they use a drummer who pretty much does intensive training for the sole purpose of being able to play as fast as on the album

as scytale said they are awesome live...for a while their first album wasn't making a profit not because of low sales but because the damage bill to property was so high at the venues they were playing
