The E3 Thread
« on: 10 Jul 2007, 21:32 »

As per the title, this is the thread where we discuss all things revealed at E3. I'm watching the Microsoft press conference live right now and they're showing off a pretty significant load of stuff. The biggest news for me this far is that Lost Odyssey and Beautiful Katamari (now a 360 exclusive) are both confirmed coming this year, Mass Effect is hitting in November, and they're bringing Marathon: Durandal to Live Arcade.

What have you heard, and what are you still excited to hear? I need more info about Super Mario Galaxy and Super Smash Brothers Brawl, including release dates, dammit.

That was announced a while ago, but sure.

Ubisoft was on stage showing off Assassin's Creed a second ago. It still looks pretty sweet, they walked into a trap to show off the combat, it seems very based on timing counterattacks properly.

From wikipedia:

"The Marathon Trilogy was finally released as freeware in early 2005, along with Forge and Anvil."

Also, Beautiful Katamari is now a 360 exclusive?? Why in the nine hells is this game not on the Wii?? They are perfect for each other.

Nintendo's press conference just ended, they announced a Wii Mario Kart with online play due in Q1 2008, Smash Brothers is out December 3rd, and Super Mario Galaxy is out November 12th. Not a whole lot else, honestly. Most of the rest was just numbers, bragging about how quickly the Wii is selling and how the DS is completely dominating, and so on.

Let's see what Sony brings to bear.

In reference to online Wii Mario Kart, all I have to say really is: fuck yes. Also nice to have dates for Smash Bros. and Mario Galaxy.

In terms of it just being bragging, Nintendo really didn't need to do too much. They're sitting pretty at the moment and giving release dates that are just in time for the holiday season for two of the four biggest games coming out this year (That is if MGS 4 actually makes it out this year. If not, well that's 2/3 against only Halo 3).

MGS4 won't make 2007. However, I think you're missing a little game called Grand Theft Auto 4. That game might end up selling a copy or two, I think.

Sony announced the PSP redesign, but I don't really see what's so great about it. Sure, it's smaller, but has it fixed any of the other problems with the system? Do the d-pad and analog stick suck less? And the triggers? And... the buttons? Oh right, the PSP is barely a video game machine. They didn't even say whether it would cost the same as the other one, and as somebody who is sort of on the fence about the PSP, this is information they should have given me. Instead they just talked about Home and some timed exclusives for a couple of shooters (Haze and Unreal Tournament 3, if you're curious) that Halo 3 will annihilate anyway. I'm not dying to play either of those games to the point where I won't just wait for the 360 versions.

I thought the exact same thing. Plus the gameplay is more likely to appeal to the average Wii owner over the average 360 owner. It's a stupid decision on the producer's part.

Well, the PS3 version has been cancelled, but as far as I know Namco didn't say anything about a Wii version, that's all been speculation. So right now the 360 version is the only announced one, and we definitely know it's not coming to the PS3.

It looks at this point like Sony has in fact locked down exclusivity for MGS4, but it seems kind of weird to me. Why would Konami say they were 'considering' a 360 version less than 12 hours before Sony announced it was PS3 only? I'm not quite sure I buy it. Maybe it'll be another timed exclusive or something, but it's still sort of confusing. That makes FFXIII more or less the only big-name announced game whose platform status is unknown.

God all I want is to play a katamari game on my own system, is that so much to ask?

WAIT A SEC

Quote from: wikipedia
Beautiful Katamari (ビューティフル塊魂, Byūtifuru Katamari Damashii?) is a video game by Namco Bandai for the Xbox 360 and the Nintendo Wii.

Have to see if this is true. I will maybe die if it is. The fact that Katamari exists is the thing that gets me through the tough times.

Okay one wikipedia source says that the wii is yes but there is also an Xbox source claiming that it is exclusive. Please let it come to the wii.

UPDATE: Internet research does not look promising.
On one hand, I understand his point, the wii controller is totally a gimmick. But it makes video games more enjoyable and easier for all of my friends who would not play games with a regular controller, really. My parents will play wii but never would play Xbox or PS3. That's the difference for me.

It's only a gimmick if it's not used properly. What I'm worried about is if the transition from a dual-analog stick controller the Wii remote doesn't work out as well as everyone hopes. I'd have to see which one worked better, since I have both systems.

Also, to prevent double posting, I'll edit this in: the first day is finally over, and what really surprised me is just how many really great-looking games are coming out this holiday season. So far the games that have excited me most so far have been Assassin's Creed and Mass Effect, but I have not yet seen Super Mario Galaxy, Bioshock, or Fallout 3 in action. Other games I saw that looked cool: Mercenaries 2 (so very many explosions), Fracture, Burnout Paradise, and (somewhat surprisingly) the Simpsons.

Call of Duty 4 looked absolutely amazing graphically, but I don't know if there's anything particularly unusual about the gameplay, but if you like shooters that's probably one you'll want. Me, I want my shooters to be a little more off-the-wall.

Tomorrow's Sony's day to shine: Gamespot's got live demos of just about all of their first party stuff. This may make or break my decision on the PS3 for this holiday.

Nintendo's press conference seems to be what everyone is focusing on, calling it as bad as Sony's was last year. I'm not sure that's fair, but to people who expect Nintendo to stick doggedly to a hardcore gamer audience, I'm sure watching Miyamoto and Reggie flop around with exercize "games" was a bit disheartening.

Still, I've come to the conclusion that all the consoles are equally depressing, so I'm going to stick to my DS for the foreseeable future. I'll probably pick up a PSP when the redesign comes out in September, unless it costs more.

I'd say calling it as bad as Sony's show is just being silly. The fact they announced Mario Kart with online was worth the entire show for me.

I also can't help but feel like the developers don't particularly care quite so much this time around. I would think that having a crowd of non-journalist gamers added a lot to their need to impress every year.

Worth mentioning are some of the additional things Nintendo announced today:

Wii Fit. Comes with some exercise board thing and I honestly might look into this. I do a lot of basic aerobic workouts to keep in shape anyways and being able to track it on my Wii is an interesting idea. I suck at math and sure as fuck can't keep track of my own BMI.

Medal of Honor will support up to 32 player online and will make use of the new Wii Zapper, a peripheral shaped kinda like a shotgun for your Wiimote and Nunchaku attachment. It's not the hideous original design shown last year. This one actually looks quite sleek. Noting that Mario Kart is supposed to support a large amount of players online, it looks like Nintendo is finally leaning towards taking online seriously.

Wii Fit is definitely going to grab onto that casual demographic they're going for (It's already front page news on Yahoo.com and being projected to be a hit) and the enhanced online capability of Medal of Honor should pull in some additional hardcore and PC games. All told, a pretty impressive showing, in my opinion.

Personally I didn't feel like any of the press conferences were particularly mindblowing. Microsoft and Nintendo didn't have much new to reveal, and Sony just went on and on about Home, and as someone who's not interested in Myspace OR Second Life, much less some creepy ad/microtransaction-driven hybrid of the two, I was irritated by that. Really, the exciting thing about E3 for me is all the Gamespot live demos I've been watching. Unfortunately, my internet was out until about an hour ago, so I missed all of today's demos. I'll have to watch the archived footage until the wee hours of the morning to catch up.

I wasn't really expecting much from this E3 and I got about what I expected.

As excited as I am about the Mario Kart announcement I'm a little sad to see they seem to be going more for the gameplay of MKDS rather than Double Dash. I think I was one of the few long time Mario Kart fans that ranked DD as probably my favorite of the series. I loved how the karts felt control wise compared to earlier games.

I'm still going to love the shit out of it, cause let's face it, it's Mario Kart. As long as they have "fixed" snaking I'll enjoy the hell out of online.

By the way, in response to earlier questioning, Gamespot currently lists Beautiful Katamari as having a 360 and a Wii version, but I haven't heard a word about the Wii version at all. I'm not even sure if it's at the show. Considering it's supposed to be coming out in October, this makes me slightly suspicious.
