Based on what I've heard (which amounts to about 3 minutes and 20 seconds of video/audio footage on Youtube), I think just about anyone could be better than Animal Collective. In any sense of the word.
Got to disagree, I mean I saw them at Webster Hall last year and although my friend made me leave after an hour, and it certainly wasn't the best set I've seen, it was far from the worst. I've seen things, my friend. I've seen David Pajo play Knitting Factory and perform his own percussion by stepping on those bell things while singing off-key. I've seen Ted Leo perform an hour and a half set so totally devoid of a voice that people close to the stage were wiping bits of his vocal cords off of their foreheads. I saw TV on the Radio do a 40 minute acoustic set at Theater at MSG so quietly they put Air fans into comas.
Air fans. I've seen "experimental" sets so raw that the guitarist actually violated his instrument with a drumstick then rubbed it upside down sandwiched between the amp and his pelvis and creating a sound that can only be described as hot sonic tongs rearranging my viscera through a hole dug into the back of my head.
Actually that last bit was kind of fun.
Alls I'm saying is that while Animal Collective may not put on a great show, I've seen a lot worse and you do get a sense of their music. Stagecraft ain't everything.
