Needless to say, it was by far the best gig ever.
Boris came on first. They started with this really lovely, mellow jam (Feedbacker.. I think.) which went on for ages. It sounded freaking awesome, to say the least. After that jam had gotten louder and died out, they moved on to their Pink album. The drummer had a habit of yelling "YEAHHHH!!!! COME ON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" all the time, even when the bassist was singing, but it was still pretty awesome times. Some big riffs and lots of psych freak out stuff. It was good times, though not exactly life changing.
Of course, the band we were all waiting was Sunn O))). ONe of the guys (not Greg or Steve, random guest dude) came out to the strains of "Here comes the Sun" by the beatles, and starts strumming what I think was a B, over and over again. He was joined by Atsuo on Gong and Csihar on Vocals. The first ten or so minutes was ridicoulously harsh, all these noise samples shooting through the guitar, attila's totally insane vocals and a bit of gong here and there.
It wasn't until the ten minute that the core of Sunn O))), Greg and Steve came out, and the real thing started. I'm sure you've heard about how intense the low end is, blah blah blah, but it has to be heard to be truly believed. Every part of your body vibrates.. And everything else seizes to be. All you can think about is the drone, and with the crazy amount of lights and smoke (heaps of smoke machine stuff), there's definitely an element of sensory overload.
The drone went on for ages, around two hours or so. The reactions from people were varied. Some dude tried to dance, some girl had this big grin on her face, other people left after half an hour or so. It was so intense!
By far the best moment (and I mean this in a good way) was when after 2 hours of insanely loud drone, they cut all the amps instantly. It was pretty strange.. As after a while you get the feeling that there has been nothing but drone, for all eternity.
Anyway, a total trip, by far the most intense, disturbing, punishing and rewarding thing I've ever done.
See Sunn O))), you won't regret it.
