Boris and SUnn O)))- Gig Review
« on: 05 May 2007, 22:24 »

Needless to say, it was by far the best gig ever.

Boris came on first. They started with this really lovely, mellow jam (Feedbacker.. I think.) which went on for ages. It sounded freaking awesome, to say the least. After that jam had gotten louder and died out, they moved on to their Pink album. The drummer had a habit of yelling "YEAHHHH!!!! COME ON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" all the time, even when the bassist was singing, but it was still pretty awesome times. Some big riffs and lots of psych freak out stuff. It was good times, though not exactly life changing.

Of course, the band we were all waiting was Sunn O))). ONe of the guys (not Greg or Steve, random guest dude) came out to the strains of "Here comes the Sun" by the beatles, and starts strumming what I think was a B, over and over again. He was joined by Atsuo on Gong and Csihar on Vocals. The first ten or so minutes was ridicoulously harsh, all these noise samples shooting through the guitar, attila's totally insane vocals and a bit of gong here and there.

It wasn't until the ten minute that the core of Sunn O))), Greg and Steve came out, and the real thing started. I'm sure you've heard about how intense the low end is, blah blah blah, but it has to be heard to be truly believed. Every part of your body vibrates.. And everything else seizes to be. All you can think about is the drone, and with the crazy amount of lights and smoke (heaps of smoke machine stuff), there's definitely an element of sensory overload.

The drone went on for ages, around two hours or so. The reactions from people were varied. Some dude tried to dance, some girl had this big grin on her face, other people left after half an hour or so. It was so intense!

By far the best moment (and I mean this in a good way) was when after 2 hours of insanely loud drone, they cut all the amps instantly. It was pretty strange.. As after a while you get the feeling that there has been nothing but drone, for all eternity.

Anyway, a total trip, by far the most intense, disturbing, punishing and rewarding thing I've ever done.

See Sunn O))), you won't regret it.

Definitely the best I've ever been to.

That was Oren Ambarchi.

Yeah, all there is for the duration of it and for a while after is sound and light and more and more sound. It's definately something that has to be experienced to fully appreciate.

Nope, he wore a monk robe (like everyone else did onstage) with some sort of cloth covering his face. He was a pretty scary dude.

Also, McTaggart- you where there? ..Want to form a drone band? jesu, sunn O))) & the like?

Seriously, no one else I know likes Drone.

Man, when I lived in Melbourne I used to see Oren Ambarchi all the time, working in a nice book / record store.  I bought a Cluster record off him.  I always wanted to confess my love for him, but given I'm a married man, it might've been a little odd.  His solo gigs are real nice, though.  I recommend them.

That's Attila's weird costume, he must only wear it for Burial chamber trio gigs.

Yeah I was there, so was David Dovey.

On the band front; I don't own any instruments bar whatever apps I might be able to find for my lappy and whatever crap I can put together with bits of electronics (I've been meaning to build some oscilllators and filters for some time now).

[edit]and by that I mean give me chance to get a way to make sounds, then hells yes

Seriously, no one else I know likes Drone.

i like drone. i also play in a drone band. or rather: a band on its way towards drone, currently stuck at abstract stoner/doom riffage with lots of noise and feedback.

i wish i could see Sunn O))), but i have no idea when they'll be playing somewhere in germany.

Yeah, I only knew him from his solo stuff and a very mellow, vaguely rootsy duo he was in called Sun.  I was really shocked when he joined Sunn O))) cos I'm hell of an anti metal guy, but that was before I listened to the band at all.

Turns out he's doing a solo show when Sunn O))) are passing through my town in a couple of weeks, so I'll go check him out.

Yeah I was there, so was David Dovey.

Damn right!

I was right up the front on the left side, directly in front of Atsuo and his gong (I got hit directly by the smoke machine several times).

Boris were absolutely incredible, so were Sunn O))). Caspian was right about that low end. Easily the loudest gig I've ever been to. I had earplugs in and I still got blasted.

I was surprised Boris played as many songs off of Pink (the only album of theirs I'd heard unfortunately) as they did. I was expecting them to play a few. So as it turns out I knew a fair part of their set which was pretty cool. I freaked when they played Farewell. It was twice as good live. I'd really love to know the name of the first song they played. Caspian suggested it was "Feedbacker"... can anyone confirm?

Also: I'm really surprised that
a) There are so many Perth forumites
b) That there were so many QC'ers at this show

I hung out with McTag a while after the show, and I would've loved to have met the rest of you crazy kids as well.

Also Caspian, seriously, if you really wanna start a Drone/experimental band, hook a brother up: I play drums.

I can confirm it was Feedbacker. They handed the set list to the guy in front of me, and I saw the set. Definitely Feedbacker. You should get some Boris.. Most of it is really good. I'd recommend Flood (74 minute long post-rock tune, really good), The Collaboration with Michio (Rainbow, it's caled), and definitely Heavy Rocks and Absolutego. Their collaboration with Merzbow, Sun Baked Snow Cave, is extremely good as well, but it's a pretty tough thing to listen to.

On the general drone side, you should definitely check out Nadja. Like Sunn O))) and Jesu mixed together.

Also, I would love to start a drone band. I play guitar, I've got a bass but not a bass amp (and it's a crappy bass).. So all we need is a bass player, and a keyboardist/general noisemaker (McTaggart with his laptop maybe?). If you want, I'll probably be on MSN later tonight (10.30 ish) so add me at [email protected] <-- terrible email, I know, a bit of an inside joke.. And we can talk about it.

This may seem like a weird offer, but if you guys are serious and yr noisemaker is going to use a Windows PC I could lend a hand getting started with Australian-made cheap software Audiomulch... I'd be happy to help out with some patches and things.  You can use it as a live fx tool, filtering whatever's coming into your soundcard, so it could be really useful in a drone context rather than the more popular, heavily tempo-based applications.  Send an output from an amp into the laptop and make everything go WOOOOOMMMMM.  I made some documents that sound like Fennesz and stuff, if that means anything.  PM me if interested.

Audiomulch

Ooh, shiny. Thanks. I've been looking for something along these lines for a while. The issue is that it seems to assume you know anything at all about electronic music things. I err, don't. I'll play around with it though and see what I can figure out.

The thing is, my computer is not very good for making music. I'm planing on buying an iBook and start doing stuf there but I'm totally broke.

I wasn't aware we were allowed to link to torrent pages...cuz that's where I found it.

It's two-disc, the second disc is a 46-minute long song.  The first song has a jackhammer in it...it's pretty damn good so far.

It's definitely Sunn O))), though...here's a picture of the back (or at least what I think is the back) of the album:
[img=http://img297.imageshack.us/img297/5445/folderyt4.th.jpg]

I hope that loads properly...

On a side note, I just finished listening to the entire thing.  It's crazy.  The end of the 46-minute song has a bit where the dude is making this fascinating noise with his mouth for 3 minutes and 10 seconds, non-stop...I'm wondering if he used a loop machine, or if he actually pulled it off.

i saw sun O))) once at a festival.
they came out as druids and spit into a coffin before going on with their drone
....and i felt like punching everyone in the band and everyone in the audience in their face...

but leaving after 12 minutes and seeing a drunken friend tell them they sucked was suffice enough.

Boris has their moments, but Sun O))) has to be the most pretentious band in existance to date.

unless they're a joke band.

so out of curiosity: can someone explain the appeal of sun O)))?

yeah, there's definetly not my thing, but Sun O))) is the only group whose existance perturbs me.

and no, i'm not trolling.  i dont like them, and i'm really wondering why people like them. i dont understand the appeal at all.

even the people who "highly recommended" them to me can't seem to explain the appeal, and that smells pretty fishy to me.
so until i get some kind of a sincere explanation from someone who "gets" them, i can't help but think its all pretentious BS. it's just been gut reaction.

I think you just have to get into the drone. It's like drugs!

It really is that simple. The drone is so hypnotic. Turn it up loud on your home stereo, sit really close to the subwoofer, close your eyes and let the drone take you away. With enough volume, all thought has a tendency to cease. It's a very relaxing experience indeed, but nonetheless powerful, a lot like meditation, but probably more like a drug trip. The drone becomes everything, and you get removed from reality. This is even more intense when they're live.  I'd also say that no one can create a dark, desolate atmosphere quite as well as Sunn O))) and other drone bands.

Obviously you have to have a fair bit of patience. I got into Sunn O))) listening to Flight of the Behemoth late at night, at an incredibly loud volume in a middle of a rather large storm. Setting definitely helps- don't try to listen to Sunn on computer speakers in summer. It's probably fair enough to say that most Sunn O))) (except for maybe black one and a few other select tracks) is more for the experience and sheer power of the drone as opposed to musical genius. Nonetheless, there are some pretty cool Sunn riffs- Death Becomes You, NN O))), The Gates of Ballard, Hell-O))) Ween in particular have really massive riffs that I think can be appreciated by most- or at least quite a few metalheads.

At the same time, I definitely acknowledge that it's an acquired taste, and it's pretty easy to see why you think it's Pretensious BS, especcially with all the hipster appeal they've somehow managed to get. Bear in mind though that there's nothing wrong with theatrics on stage, or experimentation for that matter..

I listened to White 1 at a pretty low volume (for Sunn, that is) with a crappy South Korean horror flick in the background on mute.

I was pretty much addicted after that.

Also, almost anything that is being released in Southern Lord is worth your time and ears.

i can't help but think its all pretentious BS. it's just been gut reaction.

Bear in mind though that there's nothing wrong with theatrics on stage, or experimentation for that matter..
thanks for laying out the appeal. i guess i did have a good idea of what it was, but i just didn't think it could be it. i kept wondering "am i missing something or is it really this dumb?"

i dont know if its impatience or just my distaste for things that make me feel like i'm wasting my time. not really into drugs or meditation either.
i do enjoy experimental works, but i guess Sun O))) doesn't have enough textures or "oomph" for my tastes.

random examples: i'd rather listen to Richard Devine, Merzbow, Fantomas or Muslimgauze to get that kind of kick.
