Songs for graduates
« on: 21 May 2007, 20:39 »

I have a friend who is graduating - well actually I have a few, but I have one in particular who I haven't seen in honestly ages - that I'm making a mix CD for as (part of) a gift. So far, I'm half done and have the following tunes.

"Almost Ready" - Dinosaur Jr.
"Say It All" - Sondre Lerche
"Heart Made Of Sound" - The Softlightes
"Past In Present" - Feist
"Revelations" - Yoko Ono w/ Antony of Antony & The Johnsons
"Keep The Car Running" - The Arcade Fire
"Fiery Crash" - Andrew Bird
"Such Great Heights" - Ben Folds
"Thunder Road" - Bruce Springsteen
"Suddenly Everything Has Changed" - The Postal Service
"Reunion" - Jason Collett (this is a Stars cover)

Yes yes yes there are a lot of covers, I know. This is a girl with good taste. She's heard the originals of these songs a lot.

Beyond that, any ideas? This is a general sort of thread I want going, so think of these as guidelines, and post songs that you feel fit the theme of graduation. I'm almost totally sure I'm not the only person doing this sort of thing.

P.S. If I catch so much as a subtle reference to "Graduation" by Vitamin C or "Time Of Your Life" by Green Day then so help me God you are a dead person.

School's Out - Alice Cooper

best song for the end of any school year ever.

Also, for your sappiness, "I Will Remember You" - Sarah McLaughlin (I think?) *ducks from potential punches and/or flying lamps*

I second the Journey - I have "don't stop believin'" as my license plate border... and I want to get a sticker to put above it that says "enjoy the journey."

How about "Good Riddance" by Green Day?

Sorry...

This might be a stretch, but I made a mix with M. Ward's Post-War on it for a college graduate friend.

CFtPA - Cold White Christmas?

I can't take The Final Countdown seriously anymore, cos Manny Ramirez uses it as his at-bat music.

In response the Wagner suggestion, "Trumphal March" from Sigurd Jorsfalar by Edvard Grieg is another good romantic era piece for the job.

Include some awesome, epic post-rock so that she may think she didn't just graduate, let her think she survived some war or vanquished everything evil in the world.

So you admit to have taken it seriously at some unspecified point in time  :-P?
