Looking for music:

So, I'm new, but I felt it best to get right into the thick of it. I'm looking for new music, since my music folder on my computer, and my car cd player are getting stale. I have some basic ideas of what I am looking for, but frankly I'll accept anything of sufficient musical quality.

My ideas:
(1) Distorted guitars are a plus.
(2) If there are words, I need to be able to understand them. Not necessarily English, but minimal, if any, real screaming.
(3) Eclectic choices of instrumentation are key. Violins, other stringed instruments, harps, lutes, bagpipes, or anything other than your typical guitar/bass/drums/keys/vox setup.

I'm trying to be vague here, because I don't want to condemn your recommendations to come from one or two genres.

Thanks in advance for knowing more music than I do!

Yeah, but I don't know how much you do know... do you know the basics of this kinda stuff?:

If you don't have those it's a good start... they're the first things that spring to mind with your descriptions. Do check out the sendspace
thread though, that'll be more help to you.

Ok, a little bit of clarification is in order, I guess.

No, I've never heard any of the albums that you suggested. I have vaguely heard of those bands, though. More or less, I've listened to "mainstream" music for most of my life.
I'm patently new to this style of music. I found one or two albums that I really liked, and now want to get more of this style. Really, anything anyone could suggest along my ideas would be something that I have never heard of, and am interested in hearing.

Oh, and thanks for the sendspace thread info. The couple albums I've gotten from there so far have been pretty good. A lot of it isn't in the "genre" I was looking for.*EDIT*I am looking for */EDIT* more or less rock/metal/heavy stuff with additional instruments and decent musical talent. But still really good stuff of any genre with eclectic instrument choices is ok.

You should get your hands on some Dirty Three. The guitar's not especially distorted (though it is excellently played), but violin the violin is heavily distorted (it's played through an electric guitar pick-up). Start with their self-titled album, and work your way forwards.

Arcturus' later albums have much less screaming, Sham Mirrors is really good.

So you ARE, or ARE NOT, looking for "more or less rock/metal/heavy stuff with additional instruments and decent musical talent"? Regardless, Ishotdanieljohnston has the right idea of where to start with fantastic albums. I would also try Modest Mouse's Good News For People Who Love Bad News or We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank, both of which are some of their more accessible works. I'd also suggest checking out The New Pornographers' Twin Cinema, which is just fantastic indie-rock. And finally, Wolf Parade's Apologies To The Queen Mary.

It would help if you managed to tell us which bands you like, and which bands you didn't. You don't even need reasons!

Given are assumption that this is the sort of stuff your looking for... The New Pornographers and Wolf Parade should sit well. I guess this is to early a time to reccomend Neutral Milk Hotel's In An Aeroplane Over The Sea... we don't want to rape your ears... but you should try and work your way towards that. Aaah, what else... you could give Explosions In The Sky a shot.

I think you might want to look into the Desert Sessions.  There's plenty of eclectic instrumentation and distorted guitars there, and some of the vocal work is pretty impressive (particularly PJ Harvey's work on Desert Sessions 9/10).

I was "watching" the Skyclad videos that you linked, and after the first two, I was like "meh." Then I listened to the third, and my faith in humanity was restored. Not bad. Not bad at all.

Gåte. Norwegian folk-rock band with a hot hot female singer, who sing songs about elves and things (I think). Jygri and Iselilja (sp?) are both great albums.

(In case the first vowel doesn't work on here, it's 'Gate' with a little 'o' accent on top of the 'a')

2 p2p programs, 2 torrent sites, and 4 online music retailers later, and no sign of any of Gåte's music. Though I went to the site, watched the videos on the site, and I think I like it.

Any ideas on where to find their music?

The 'clad are, I admit, a band you have to ease into. It probably took me a couple of months of casually listening and going 'yeah, not bad' to really get into them. They're also better experienced in an album setting. Also, the versions of the songs on the youtube videos are a bit flat and compressed, and maybe not the exact songs I would choose to promote the band. Were I to make a mix-tape to promote the band it would probably contain:

Check out the second Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros album, Global A Go Go. It's basically world music through the filter of a punk rock veteran, and it has tons of flutes, violins, varied percussion, etc. All the lyrics are sung by The guy from the Clash, totally understandable, and are often quite clever. The last track is an 18 minute long insturmental march that is basically stunningly beautiful.

Neutral Milk Hotel? The screaming content is minimal, and the horns are always fun, but the odd occasional feeling like you're watching Mission Hill after consuming way too much bean dip and salsa are kind of a minus. Or maybe that's just me...
