Ok this is a kind of specific request, but I'm after music with Female Vocals and pretty heavy use of keys/strings I guess kind of in the Gothic sort of style.

Umm to get people on track with what I'm after: Something like Peccatum, Chalice or Voivin era Therion would be nice.

Doesn't have to be metal, I'd prefer it if it wasn't. I'd like if the vocals were sort of in the operatic style but it's not really a requirement.

I havn't listened to them but there are a Taiwanese metal band with a female singer (and yes, they sing in english on their english records). But I don't know how much keys/strings they are using...

That's exactly the sort of thing Im after, they reminded me a bit of Enya, in a good way.

I don't care at all about whether the lyrics are English or not, more interested in the music.

Have you heard Dead Can Dance? Lisa Gerrard's not operatic, but there's a lot of mediaeval stylings and so on that might appeal, and they were generally lumped in as Goth. I'd recommend seeing if you can track down 'Within The Realm of a Dying Sun' or 'The Serpent's Egg'.

Has anyone heard Blackmore's Night, I think Khar is a fan of them I'm curious as to how they sound.

Have you heard of Amber Asylum? They sound like exactly what you are looking for, gothic, not metal, lotsa strings and operatic female vocals. Vocals are used pretty sparingly though, a lot of songs are purely instrumental. Anyway; www.myspace.com/amberasylum Hope you like it.

Blackmores Night are cheesy as all hell. They actually have a song about how awesome Renaissance Faires are. BUT: great vocals, brilliant guitar. You're either going to love it or hate it, depends how far you can suspend your disbelief. From my judgement of your character, I think you should quite enjoy them. I'd recommend to start with Fires at Midnight and then Under a Violet Moon.

You may well know Theatre of Tragedy, but if you don't check them out for goodness' sake. Early stuff only, they suffered from 'Goth Metal disease' (turning into a shitty goth pop band in the late 90s). Velvet Darkness They Fear is a classic.

A more unknown option is Orkrist. They are just absolutely classic goth/symphonic metal. Might be hard to get hold of legitimate copies of their stuff.

I was going to continue with this earlier but now I'm pretty stoned so I will leave you wih less useful advice now and give yo moure later rather than just not finishoing this post and giving you no advice ever.

I was going to suggest this band. They have a few songs which are almost entiery the female singer backed with mediaeval instrumentation. I'm not an expert in their stuff, but I prefer their album "Reginae Mysterium"

The Gathering - An old school Doom Metal band. They might pluck your strings.
Also mentioned Therion. The band that was Therion became Crystal Viper. Check them out as well.

Hanzel und Gretyls lead vocalist is female. I think her name is Vas Kallas.

According to my research (Metal-archives.com), Crystal Viper are a fairly-new heavy metal from Poland. What they have to do with Therion, i have no idea. They also do not have any females in the band or use any symphonic/orchestral elements, such as Therion is known for. In conclusion, I'm really confused.

The Hush Sound? They emphasize both the male and female vocalists. She also plays piano. Which is one of the main instruments in the band. Loquat is a weird little indie pop band i found on my mp3 player when i got it. Rosematter is a pretty sweet pop punk band with a very good female vocalist. Imogen Heap has a pretty amazing voice.

Then there's Evanesance like Scarlette said. If you like that you could try Lacuna Coil too.

It's a bit off the wall, but Diablo Swing Orchestra is pretty awesome. Classical type female vocalist, lots of strings, heavy guitars, not so much with the keyboards though (but they're around). www.myspace.com/diabloswingorchestra is (I think) their myspace.

Opera's a bit to theatrical for my tastes. some are marvellous like "Das Rheingold" but for the most part it's a genre I'm not too keen on. Mozarts symphonies are pretty brilliant though.

Lacrimosa are pretty great.

Now I return to this thread in more sober condition I would also recommend:

Cruachan, Orphanage, Butterfly Temple, Lumsk, Storm, the first 3rd and the Mortal album, Matriarch and, depending on your ability to withstand mindraping levels of symphonic black metal cheese, some illnath and Theatres Des Vampires.

Sol Invictus' albums 'In a Garden Green' and 'The Hill of Crosses' feature some awesome female vocals. If you like that sort of stuff, I can recommend you a whole slew of other female-fronted or featuring neo-folk.

And even though it's musically quite removed from what you've asked for, you definitely should check out Diamanda Galas. This clip should explain why.

Honestly, I have no flipping clue about anything similar to Diablo Swing Orchestra. I'm sure it exists somewhere, I simply have no clue as to where.
