Rez

Had to post this here, Rez is one of my very favorite games ever and the word must be spread :P

Rez is a single player art/music based shooter for PS2/Dreamcast created by Sega. Your actions manipulate music and visuals to great effects, this game combines elements from many games to create something very fun and unique. I highly reccommend it.

This music shooter takes place in cyberspace. While this may not sound that interesting, incredible cyber visuals look simply astonishing and work in conjunction with the driving music to creating an intense feel that makes you feel like you’re inside a living mainframe.
You play through a series of environments. The brilliant use of seemingly primitive wire-frames and vectors give it a distinct retro look though the graphics don’t feel dated in the slightest and makes good use of the PS2's abilities.

Rez features very good artistic graphics and are hardly ever just stationary, they all usualy have a moving/pulsing element which is very trippy and makes for great visual effects.
Even the rails you fire from shooting are really cool and change every time you level up.
When enemys and missles are destroyed you great lighting effects, which when added with the music kind of produces advanced visuliation effects that you get with mp3 players.

What really sets this game apart is the music. Each level has a music track with it, but you effect the music while playing the game. Instead of typical gun and explosion noises shooting down different enemys produces different musical sounds and your weapon is more of gentle clapping sound which adds to the beat.
As you progress through the level more layers of sound are added to the song aswell as the sounds from your shooting.

The gameplay is reasonably simple (this doesn't make the game easy) and doesn't take long to get used to, you simple use one analog stick to control your crosshair and drag it over your target and press your shoot button.
You can target up to 8 targets at a time by holding down the shoot button, by doing this you get well timed sound which makes the music sound cooler, gives you more points and is actually an easier way of shooting down some enemys.

The controller also vibrates intime with the music and the action on the screen.

The game is set in a vast computer network where a female AI program named Eden begins to doubt her very existence and purpose, dropping into a state of unconsciousness. You play the part of a hacker trying to reawaken the program, to do this you must complete a series of levels defeating the firewalls that have been set up to protect Eden.
Not much of the plot is seen untill the last level, where inbetween minibosses you communicate with Eden and she pleads for your help "save me...".

As you progress in the game you can unlock a very wide variety of things, completing a normal level will unlock it in travel mode for example where you are invicible, travel mode is awesome when you just want to mess around and chill instead of the usual intense gameplay.
Another really great feature is that unlocking (some) fetatures works with gameplay time aswell as acheiving a goal. So if you can't do it, it will eventunatly be unlocked anyway.

Other modes include, Score attack, Boss Rush & Direct Assault. Other forms and levels are also unlockable.

Finally, also unique to this game is the USB VIBRATOR, this handy device plugs into the 2nd player port and vibrates in time to the music. Costs around $35 and is availble only by importing from japan, although its not sold as a masturbation device apparently its had great success in that area ;)

I fucking love this game.

So has anyone else played this game? Bought the Vibrator ;)?

unfortunately, the review of the rez-vibrator is down right now.

if you google "rez vibrator" the first result is a pretty decent review of the vibrator itself.

this game is so five years ago.

I'm sorry, but I've just died due to the insane colors and random bolding and italics used in that post.

I've heard amazing things about this game and have wanted to play it, but the Dreamcast was the preferable system to play it on, and I cannot get my hands on one right now.

Also, please don't overdue the game introduction. This feels like you're advertising something retro, like a lava lamp at a nostalgia store.
In other words, this reads as quite promotional for the game, although it isn't new.

Whatever you do, don't follow the Rez vibrator link back to its main page. Turns out to be some kind of ::gasp:: porn site.
