The Newly Announced Games Thread
« on: 05 Jul 2007, 09:29 »

For some reason there have been a lot of new games announced recently, probably because the smaller publishers are worried their games would be lost in the shuffle at E3 if they don't get them out before hand. This is the thread for news about new game announcements and we can talk about them!

This sounds like the best idea ever. I hope it gets a North American localization, because the 360 is region-locked.

Also, Contra 4 for the DS. With co-op multiplayer.

And BioWare is making a fucking Sonic RPG. It sounds insane, but I'm sure Super Mario RPG did when it first came out too.

And someone's finally making a World War 1 first person shooter. I have no real inherent love for shooters in general, but if they get this one right it could be really cool.

There are a couple WWI FPS games. They came out a while ago and they weren't well received. I don't remember the names but I remember hearing about a couple and playing one. It wasn't very good. At all. Hopefully this new game will be because it's a potentially awesome video game setting. On a related note, how come nearly every single WWII game is set in Europe. Very very few are set during in the Pacific area. I think a Pacific WWII game would be a very nice change of pace. Same with Africa. We need more games (not single levels, actual games) set there. Those two settings would certainly rejuvenate the WWII FPS genre a bit.

I don't know if co-op multiplayer was confirmed or not yet. By that I mean they initially said it would have 4 person co-op but I guess that wasn't announced officially.

2-player co-op is confirmed, 4 player has not been confirmed yet.

WWII FPS should not be a genre.

It shouldn't, but judging by the fact that I could sit here for an hour typing out the names of FPS games set in WWII without referring to anything but the games I already know about, I'd say that sadly it is. It's just such an easy time period for developers to work with I guess.

On a related note, how come nearly every single WWII game is set in Europe.

Two Reasons:
1. The Japs make the games
2. We have romanticized (sp?) the European Theater to the point that it's almost fiction.

True, I can only think of two Pacific WWII games off the top of my head, both were really well done IMHO.

Africa is part of the European Theater, technicaly, so you have to lump it in with the rest of it.  Plus, the only "good" battles in Africa were with Paton yelling obscenities at the Germans and the English.  And the game would have to center on a Tank commander, or Patton and Montgomery.  Although, a multiplayer version of that could be fun... Why not? All the Call of Duty and Brothers in Arms games were good fun.

Sure some ofthem were good, but we really really don't need so many. I think I meant more along the lines of "Battlefield 1942 clones should not be a genre."

All this chatter about 'different' WWII games and no mention of Turning Point?

Yikes.  It's right up your alley.
