Directors of Tomorrow
« on: 06 Jul 2007, 23:37 »

Matt and I were watching music videos today, and getting very frustrated that these days nobody (at least nobody in the top 40 on Channel V) has any good, fun, or original ideas for their music videos - it's all bands in white suits standing around singing with winces on their faces, or the solo lady singer walking through waves in a long dress.
If you had to direct a music video, what sort of song would it be, and what would your video be like?

My first idea was a video for a computery Daft-Punk type thing, and it would involve people dressed in full-body foam costumes like this:

And playing at a water park.

Although it's not totally original I think it is a completely awesome idea.

AH video clips.  here is a short list i have going

- There is a giant rock across from my house.  i'd love to set up there, put a camera on my balcony and get a shot from across the water of just playing live

- a split screen of the band playing in an empty hall, camera on the door, and a camera walking down the street.  the cameras intersect and thousands of people pour into the hall

- two words: McDonalds Playland

Music videos are stupid. I much prefer to just turn on the visualizer thingy while playing songs on iTunes. Then the visuals are just ambient background and you pay attention to the sound, the way it should be.

3 minutes of a tired man eating cereal.

From a bowl.

Possibly milk involved.

but the music sucks because the keyboards don't have the cold/mechanical sound they had but a wannabe techno sound that it's pathetic for Rammstein standars.

Yeah we had to produce a music video in my Video Production and Aesthetics class. I do believe my teacher would have punched me in the face five times and then menstruated in my mouth if I would've turned in a video like that to her. Actually no, scratch that, she would probably just shoot me and dump my body in a river in some god forsaken place like Cherynoble or Alaska.

I have often pondered this very issue. But with a degree of seriousness given that I am in a band. So far my best idea is to have the band playing in a small room filled with dilapidated (spelling?) Victorian/Edwardian furniture in a relatively sepia tone. There would also be corpses of people in formal dress arranged throughout the room, as if they are still doing stuff.

I hate videos that are basically of the band playing but dressed up as an idea.

Remember Me by British Sea Power (Singing war memorials - always classy)
Saturday Looks Bad To Me by Oppenheimer

I really am terrible. I just came here to plug 'Interstella 5555.' Possibly the greatest music video ever created.
