Twue Wuv Mix CD
« on: 20 Jul 2007, 21:09 »

So one of my cousins is engaged to be married, and I guess I'm supposed to be a bridesmaid. I am skeptical how that will turn out, but that is beside the point. An aunt of hers is throwing her an engagement party next month, and I wanted to put together a mix CD of love songs to give her. I have no idea what type of music she listens to these days (we're close, but don't really hang out like we used to when we were kids), so I don't really care if it's stuff she's already into or not. In fact, I would love it if I opened her up to some great bands/artists she hasn't listened to/heard of.

Long story longer, I was hoping you guys could suggest some songs for me to check out as possible tracks for the CD. I don't really want the whole thing to be stereotypical "oldies" that everyone knows about, unless I decide they are just too amazing to be left out.

I think the consensus in the other love-related mix topic was that something from '69 Love Songs' by The Magnetic Fields has to feature in there somewhere.

I favour 'Come Back From San Francisco' myself but there's plenty on there to choose from.

Your Hand in Mine- Explosions in the Sky
Sure it's instrumental but the sound is perfect. It just works somehow. I put it on a mix I made for my gf and she loved it when she had never heard instrumental music before. It's a good, different piece that will um..mix up any mix.

Trees Keep Growing- Azure Ray
Whisper quite vocals and instrumentals by this very nice duo from Georgia (the state). Nice little love song.

First Day of My Life- Bright Eyes
Kinda indie rock, kinda folksy, nice lyrics. Good for love song mixes in general.

Such Great Heights- Iron and Wine
Very pretty song in general. More accoustic stuff but it's great for this kind of mix.

That's what comes to mind at the moment.

That sentences confuses me.

Dogs by Page France always makes it onto mixes I make when I'm trying to make nice mixes for people.  It works a little better if the two are religious (at the end it feels like it's romantic in a religious undertone sort of way)

Stevie Wonder songs always do the trick, also.

By instrumental music I mean music that is entirely instrumental. No lyrics. "Post rock" and such.

Big Love - Fleetwood Mac

Is it weird that this is the first place my mind goes?  I think it is.

Tell them the title of this song really sums up the very nature of the bride and then play 'Easy' by Faith No More.

LOL! I considered putting "Here Comes the Snake" by the Cherry Poppin' Daddies, and "Toucha Toucha Touch Me" from RHPS on it.

Everyone's given great suggestions so far! I am in the process of downloading the songs I don't already have.

Be fair. I've never heard the original, and as such could only reference that one.

I could also have suggested the entirely different song by Barenaked Ladies.

play 'Easy' by Faith No More.

If I record an identical version of 'Blowin' In The Wind' does that make it "by tommydski"?

Yes. You haven't been paying much attention to the modern world, have you?

I'd say go with Ben Folds -  "The Luckiest"

V/Vm - Sick Love

Honetly, if I ever get married, this entire album of messed up love tunes will be played at the reception afterwoods.

Also I would like to point out that the combination of Sailor Moon and faux-Kerouac / Sonic Youth spelling is perhaps the purest distillation of what this forum is that we have yet been presented with.

Ben Fold's cover is probably my favourite.

Also

There's a girl from the Chicagoland area Rachel Ries who writes very cute tunes that would be great love mix fodder.  A compliment to her would be Erin McKeown.    I would recommend finding "Our Summertime" by Ries and "Didn't They" by McKeown.
