Darjeeling Limited
SusurrusIgnoramus:
i saw it last night. i really really REALLY wanted to like it, but i was kind of disappointed... no, more than kind of the more i think about it. i'm a big wes anderson fan, and as always, this was beautifully shot, but this one was almost... TOO wes anderson, if that makes sense... lots of "meaningful pauses" very self aware, "quirky" dialogue, and any sort of symbolism was incredibly heavy-handed.
he was so worried about being artsy that he forgot to tell his story. i didn't get a good enough feeling for any of the characters, and didn't really care about them at all. and to top it all off, it wasn't very funny. there were a few parts i laughed at, but even then, they felt sort of forced... i wanted them to be funnier than they were.
he's a good director, and has made some great films... some of my favorites. but he's become such an "indie legend" that he has just ended up jacking-off to the idea of how cool he is. there was a time when indie simply meant free from corporate sponsorship and control. now it's an asthetic that is over-produced, and marketed, by large record labels, distribution companies, clothing stores, etc. as a friend of mine said today, indie is "finally eating itself in sofia coppola decadence."
this filmdrunk article made me laugh: http://filmdrunk.com/post.phtml?pk=266

What does that even mean?
SusurrusIgnoramus:
i dunno... just thought it sounded amusing.
she's a watermark for pretentious indie movies. lots of indie movies are turning to her 'starefest with the camera' technique (lost in translation, for example). now it's used so much, its become irrelevant to anything.

I loved The Virgin Suicides, I don't know about you.

That quote is amazing. Based on that quote, I've decided to drink a few cans of the Sofia sparkling wine and go see the film. Whoever found that or posted that or whatever, that was amazing. A pink can of sparkling wine made by Sofia Coppola? Can life get and more beautiful? You would understand if you were into the whole fashionista irony sort of thing.
