Reason not to post in a dead threadl:
It bumps it to the top of the first page.
Why is this bad?
Because there are interesting ACTIVE threads that are no longer getting the attention they deserve. You're filling the first page with threads that have already run their course and putting the threads that matter out of people's narrow field of vision.
Dimmukane, I'm going to assume that you've bumped 29 old and useless threads. There are about 50 threads per page.
That means you may have possibly KILLED 29 threads that had not yet run their course.
You are a MURDERER.
Not even the bridge trolls kill that many threads!

i only ever go to see the first gig by each band.

then if they play a second they suck.

I knew I heard an accent at my band's first gig. You should've said hi.

Meh its a ressurected topic but I missed it the first time. So I'll reply

60% of the stuff I get into comes from my 2 so called "scary metal friends", well thats how my flat mates refer to them :P whom have very excellent tastes, generally when they say, you have to check out this album, or you have to see these guys when they play, I'll know its worthwhile.  They both play in bands and 1 of them has a fairly good distribution deal with a label and I guess is pretty well known round the local scene. They have an amzing collection of demos that puts my handful to shame. I don't know how they do it. They goto gigs and people throw demos at them. I'm lucky if I can get 1 demo handed to me for every 6 or 7 gigs I goto, they'll sometimes get 3 or 4 different bands giving them cd's, It's generally like "Hey you guys rock, you have to check out our shit", The myth about getting chicks from being in a band is crap, but you do get a lot of demos :)

20% of the stuff I listen to comes from general word of mouth hype, at gigs or on the net whatever, if I here enough positive noise about a band or an album I'll check it out eventually.

10 % comes from Metal Archives, I'll find a reviewer whom has similar taste to me and look up other albums they've rated highly.

Last 10% comes from forums and stuff, where I'll ask for reccomendations or download mp3's etc.

I listen to the radio, or let the music videos play randomly on music.yahoo.com, or listen to different stations on AOL Radio

StumbleUpon found a website that I care for a great deal.

www.betterpropaganda.com

Also, one of the bars that I haunt has a few good promotions, like 'we play your vinyl night' and such that are enlightening.

1) Reading up on the history of a band I already like and buying related artists to them (or other bands that that band has members in)
2) Local shop
3) Friends
4) Ask people on forums
5) Go to shows
6) the RL list

I usually just listen to my friends' advice, seeing as we all pretty much like the same kinds of music. But I gotta give props to TehBoredOne for using yahoo music to randomly play videos, because I do that and that is how I found a lot of great stuff. Online radio lists and compilations are the best!

1. Remixes: By far my greatest musical love is electronica (mainly futurepop, ebm etc). The great thing about this genre is that nearly every damn CD has a couple remixes at the end, or a special edition with a second disk with even more remixes. You can start with one band, then check out the 2-10 bands that remixed them, then do the same for each of those bands, ad infinitum. Genius.

2. Trusty sources: If I plunder someone's download folder on soulseek for a few CDs and notice that they have a lot of stuff I like, I'll probably grab some other shit at random.
2a. Interesting names: This 'other shit' is usually bands with funky sounding names, or whose names I've vaguely heard in passing but never gotten around to checking out before.

3. Friends. Obvious. "Check out [band]." Okay!

4. Last but not least, internets. Similar artists/neighbour charts on Last.fm, bored and clicking around review sites, http://www.gnod.net (Pandora is basically shit), allmusic.com's top album lists for a new genre, random albums from Oink, etc etc.

Internet is teh source, mostly. Random clicking, last.fm recommendations (though in the last few weeks it's been recommending me nothin' but bad alt-country bands)...
And friends, the second source. I have a music nerd friend, he keeps giving me new and new discs of mp3s, and it's pretty hard to keep up with him :)

I bring a CD player* to Future Shop and steal select CDs, then hide in the bathroom and sample them. Any ones I like, I buy**. Also, I can't get my brothers to shut their goddamn stereo off, and sometimes that rubs off.

None of my friends are into indie, so mostly either word of mouth from boards such as this one, or metacritic.  Like, if something gets a 75 or higher I'll listen to whatever they have on Myspace, if I like it I'll buy it.

Sometimes the message board parts can be annoying, because there don't seem to be any indie forums without rampant glib sarcastic mean-spiritedness.

This thread got super bumped again. Oh well.

I generally find new music with last fm, and from a few message boards. Having said that, I haven't looked for new music for a very long time. I've found the kind of music I like, I've found plenty of bands I like, now I'm just trying to complete the discography of said bands. When I am sick of all these bands I have about a hundred bands that everyones gone "OMG YOU MUST CHECK THIS OUT", so then I'll download some.

I have found good music at Amoeba. Their used CDs are dirt cheap, so it doesn't really matter if you pick up a crappy band here and there. Plus, the employees there are fantastic. You tell them a couple mainstream bands you like, and they'll point you to something else you might like that you've never heard of.

This list was a big help:

http://sordo.freehostia.com/index.php?letter=%23&PHPSESSID=456b05f88cab7e3693c12e6b82c294ff

I went through the entire thing, listened to every band I already didn't know about and, if I liked what I heard, downloaded the albums. It took a long time but it was well worth it.

Recently, I've been going through a label compilation CD (Waterbug), some really good folk music on there.

CDBaby.com - there's a lot of crap on there, but they let you stream the first 2 minutes of most songs.

Pandora.com (I've probably discovered about 75% of the artists/bands I like via Pandora)

The Bottom Forty on the local alternative radio station

MTV2's Subterranean

Suggestions/recommendations from other people

On Demand music video channels

Finding a band on the internet that I've never heard (of) and thinking "I wonder what they sound like?" and playing any clips that are available.  It's pretty easy to tell if it's an indie-rock band by the name, so I can avoid rap and country and stuff like that, that I don't like.

I also still buy CDs--I don't own an iPod although I covet one--and the best place to buy music in Portland is Music Millennium.  Last time I was there I spent over $100 on CDs and found several that I hadn't been able to find anywhere else--Bettie Serveert, for example.  (They had two Bettie Serveert CDs but I only bought one.)  I need to go again, there are several CDs I've been wanting that I can't find at the local FYE.

I like to use XMU to find interesting new bands.

Either that or Last.Fm.
That site is so useful. However, word of mouth is always a good deal.

Pretty much just our good friend E. Spaceman keeps my busy with good musics.

I just want to be down on record as saying that this is NOT a good way to find good new music! He's basically just keeping you doped up on cheap (and easy to find) drugs while he keeps the really good stuff for himself. I am quite sure of this.

I feel a lot better buying from them than, say, Amazon. Last time I asked them to send me a little message with my CD, and they sent me a card! So it's usually Amazon for the stuff I know I want, and CDbaby when I'm feeling adventurous.
