Casting for a Discworld movie?
« on: 13 Jun 2007, 00:07 »

I heard a few years back that they were working on one, but I've not seen anything on it since.  I think I also heard about an old BBC show, but yet again, searches have been in vain.

So, who would you cast in various roles?  To limit things down a bit lets stick to, say, 'The Colour of Magic' through 'Sourcery'.

Rincewind- Simon Pegg

Twoflower- ???

Cohen the Barbarian- Levon Helm (he just looks the part, okay?)

The Creator of the World- John Cleese

(subnote: all remaining original cast members of the Monty Python troupe would have to have cameos at some point)

Hrun the Barbarian- Dwayne Johnson

Herrena the Henna Haired Herridan- Ellie Chidzley

And so on, and so forth...

There's been a live action TV series of Hogfather, and cartoons of Soul Music and Wyrd Sisters. Christopher Lee voiced Death in the cartoons.

And Ian Richardson did the Voice of Death in the Hogfather, and recently he died.  It was actually pretty good for a TV movie.

If they ever do one with Vetinari, it has to be Alan Rickman...

Gleason could do Sgt. Colon pretty well, I think.

Ralph Fiennes would do a great Rincewind.

If you don't like him, watch Spider.

Eric Idle voiced Rincewind in the decent PC adventure games.

Maybe Bob Hoskins as Twoflower?  Twoflower should be Asian, but I can't think of an Asian actor who would do.

The guy who plays Hiro Nakamora in Heroes. He has the right look about him, that sort of complete idotic innocence.

When I was reading night watch I kept imagining a really good casting for Vimes, but now I can't think of it, that really annoys me.

I suppose the other question is, if you had to choose one book to make into a movie which would it be?

I suppose Night Watch would have the most mainsteam appeal, but I think that the first books up through Sourcery would still make the BEST movie.  Carpe Jugulum or Small Gods would also make good ones.

Interesting Times all the way - would make an awesome movie.

Yeah, but Interesting Times would also require a LOT of backstory for some of the jokes to really hit as well as some of the other books.  In fact, I guess anything featuring Rincewind would pretty much require the entire series to be made, from 'The Light Fantastic' all the way through 'The Last Continent', to be completely satisfying.  Let's face it, 'Eric' may not have been the best book, but you want to read it to really understand just how funny the events surrounding Rincewind are.  An early section of dialog from 'Interesting Times' goes something like this:

Archchancellor: What have you done for wizardry, Rincewind?
Rincewind: Well, I think I may have saved the world a couple of times.
Archchancellor: But was any of it particularly wizardly?

Not an exact quote by any stretch, but gets the point across.  If you've read the early books, then this is hilarious because every time Rincewind has 'saved the world', it's been from what was essentially a screw-up by the staff of Unseen University to some extent.  So...

Wait a minute, why am I rambling about this?  Sorry.

Here's my question: who would play Dibbler?

Mayhap Tony Robinson for CMOTD

Men at Arms would make a great movie, as would Thud! though it would require to much backstory.

Film versions of all of the Rincewind stories would be unbelievably awesome but the colour of magic alone could make 2/3 films they'd take forever to make (of course if it was done well Terry Pratchett would be able to buy a solid gold house by the end)
does anything else think Jim Broadbent would be brilliant as Mustrum Ridcully?

Look at all the time they've invested in Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter.  I'd be willing to say that a Discworld movie would undoubtedly appeal to a broader audience than either one of those- despite the fact that those books are far more popular with the 'mainstream' crowd, there are a lot of elements of Pratchett's work that are almost made for cinema.  Come to think of it, it'd be rather interesting to see a film version of 'Moving Pictures'...

Well, the guy who did Ridcully in "Hogfather" was pretty good...It might work, though.

I really like the idea, but isn't he pretty young to be playing Twoflower (who, if memory serves, has grown up children)?

Given that Simon Pegg as Rincewind is perfect casting, it's a shame that Nick Frost couldn't do Twoflower.

Men At Arms, but then I've got a soft spot for the Watch books.  Vimes is a tricky one to cast; I think he's probably Pratchett's best developed character (with a proper arc and everything, which is more than can be said for a lot of them) and consequently is much harder to "type".  I'm thinking maybe Ralph Fiennes (but all skinnied up and dowdy looking) or Daniel Day Lewis (though he might be too intimidating to play Vimes, whom I've always seen as sort of small and wiry - hence his tendency to fight dirty).

As for the first few books, I guess most of the wizards could be pretty much played by anyone since it's mainly old-man-hair-and-beard acting that'd be called for.  The Librarian I guess would have to be CG and animal noises, though I really like the idea of them doing a South Park and getting a really famous actor into a recording studio just to say "ook" in several different ways.  I find that in the early books a lot of the characters are just too much of fantasy parodies to be really interesting to think much about, but Granny Weatherwax will probably generate a lot of opinions.  Personally I'd say either Meryl Streep (just because she seems to be able to do pretty much anything) or Emma Thompson (I suppose that's the obvious choice, but I can see it working).

As for directors, I'd love to see what Terry Gilliam would do with Anhk Morpork or how a director like David Fincher would approach the darker comedy of the Watch series.

Oh, and Gaspode would obviously have to be Colin from Spaced.  Duh.

If any of you have seen Where's My Cow?, the Vimes illustrated in that looks a lot like Pete Postlethwaite.

A film of 'Night Watch' would be most excellent.

I have to agree with CookedHaggis on Terry Gilliam as a director. That would be awesome.

Ralph Fiennes could also do a really good job as Vetinari. Gary Oldman would also be excellent, though he could also do a good take on Vimes, too.

I've got to second the guy from Heroes as Twoflower, though. After watching the first ep of Heroes I was thinking "ok, that guy could play a really good Twoflower".
