Should I get Supreme Commander?

The learning curve is definitely steep. If you've played total Annihilation you'll have the basic idea down though.

The single player campaign is pretty fun and a good introduction to all of the games units, but it's not a good thing to compare to the skirmish mode, and especially the online mode. Online is rough, and I suck terribly when playing humans, but it's a lot of fun.

One important thing to get down is make sure you're always building something. ALWAYS. There's an infinite queue button at production buildings for a reason.

That has some good tips concerning things, Otherwise, look for videos of recorded combats and pay attention to the strategies. There's a hell of a lot of possibilities with the number of units in the game and how the developers utilized their abilities.
