I don't have near as many bands as I'd like on my playlist, but I've absolutely fallen in love with The Weakerthans. Any suggestions for similar bands?

For some reason it seems like I want to reccomend a lot of bands, but I can't think of any bands similar to The Weakerthans.

Islands' lead singer has a similar sound, but they have a much more mellow rock sound. This is my opinion, though. You should check them out, but there's a possibility they aren't what you're looking for at all.

Jimmy Eat World's Bleed American was kinda similar I guess. It has 10 of the most honest and sincere pop ballads about teenage love and death and insecurity ever written. There's even a song on there that is bitter and angry! It has everything.

You could check out the band John K. Samson was in before the Weakerthans, Propagandhi, if you like heavier stuff.  Lately, I've been really into a band called Pinback, they're another kind of mellow indie rock band.  And of course if you're talking about the sincerest of song writers you have to check out Daniel Johnston.   Bob Dylan's album Blood on the Tracks was a really sincerely written record also.

Saosin does a cover of Penelope, but it's not nearly as good as the original. Especially because Saosin is whiny emo music.

But, hey. Any band that covers Pinback is okay in my book.

I don't know.  Just because Braid did a cover of "This Charming Man" doesn't make them necessarily good.  And The Weakerthans are a Canadian indie rock band that formed when John K. Samson left Propagandhi (thank god.  The man does great work in The Weakerthans but made Propagandhi sound like a bunch of pussies).  Their first two albums were released on G7 Welcoming Committee Records and then they moved to Epitaph.  "Fallow" their first record is supposed to be much more punk influenced.  Seeing as I don't own an album by them I wouldn't know.  They're definetly worth checking out.

When it comes to Weakerthans, I much prefer the songs they have from "Left and Leaving" and "Reconstruction Site."

Pinback seems interesting, I'll certainly be listening to a bit of them.

Any other suggestions? I guess what I like about The Weakerthans is the way that the vocals don't mirror the guitar, but instead harmonize with it.

Also, I really like Arcade Fire's "Funeral." Any bands similar to them?

3/4 of The Weakerthans were Greg Graffin's backup band on his solo album "Cold as the Clay." It's a bunch of really genuine American folk songs, absolutely nothing like Bad Religion in any way, and one of my favourite albums ever.

I actually have most of the Bad Religion discography on my computer, but I couldn't stand Cold as the Clay. I have it, but didn't bother ripping it on my comp. Greg Graffin and Mr. Brett are amazing men.
