Free (Legally) Games

So yesterday I happened across this article and it got me thinking... There are free and open source programs for most any kind of programs out there that have become relatively popular. You can use GIMP for photo editing or OpenOffice to replace the Microsoft equivalent, but you rarely hear about good games that you can get for free.
Do you have any games that you like to play that are suitable for a cheap bastard like myself?

Rockstar has GTA 1 and 2 up for free download off of their website.
They're working on a browser-based freeware version of Quake 3 Arena. Don't know when it'll be done.
