Rainy Day Musics?
« on: 30 Aug 2007, 15:01 »

It's raining today.  I feel mellow and tired, and slightly irritable.  Recommend me music that's mellow and for a rainy day.  Not music that an irritated person would listen to.  Because my mood is picking up.  Please?

I was thinking about it in my car, and the only stuff really suitable for a rainy day on my mp3 player was Broken Social Scene, that one Edwin McCain song and some Goo Goo Dolls.

Actually, what I'm listening to right now would be absolutely, positively, and in all other ways perfect.  Arvo Pärt's "Spiegel im Spiegel"

No, seriously. This is rainy day music. If I ever make a movie, and it has a rainy day scene, this will be the soundtrack. The characters will stop and do nothing for a while, just so that the audience gets the point that this is rainy day music.

but the music sucks because the keyboards don't have the cold/mechanical sound they had but a wannabe techno sound that it's pathetic for Rammstein standars.

I like to listen to Great Lake Swimmers when it's raining. But only with a particular kind of rain.

When it is grey and rainy I like to listen to Arab Strap. I imagine that the guys in Arab Strap have never seen a day that was not grey and rainy.

There are so many songs... but here is one song I've played at least once on almost every single rainy day for the last few years:

haha excellent.

Also I would like to point out that the combination of Sailor Moon and faux-Kerouac / Sonic Youth spelling is perhaps the purest distillation of what this forum is that we have yet been presented with.

I just remembered that Silver Jews would be really good on a rainy day.  I haven't been able to test said theory out yet because there's a drought here.  But when I do, it will be the most glorious rainy day music ever.

This is the kind of music that I find myself listening to on rainy days.  Most of it is Downbeat with a little bit of Folk mixed in:

Bang Gang - Follow
Baxter - Possible :: Actually, their entire s/t CD is great for rainy days.
Caribou - Hello Hammerheads
Cocorosie - Raphael
Des Ark - Lord of the Rings & His Fascist Timekeepers
Flunk - Keep On
Flunk - Six Seven Times
Husky Rescue - New Light of Tomorrow (Bonobo Mix)
Husky Rescue - Poison
Inara George - Fools in Love
The Go Find - Adrenaline
Junior Boys - Count Souvenirs
The Kilimanjaro Dark Jazz Ensemble - The Nothing Changes
Psapp - Calm Down
Stars - Personal
The Tara King Theory - Am I That Easy to Forget
Wax Tailor - Sometimes
Jenny Wilson - Common Around Here

Sorry for the length of the list, but the bulk of the music that I listen to qualifies as rainy day music, yet I live in a desert, so who knows--

Current 93 - A Song For Douglas After He's Dead
Death in June - 13 Years of Carrion
Diamanda Galas - Gloomy Sunday
The Legendary Pink Dots - The Flesh Parade
My Dying Bride - Sear Me MCMCX III
Sol Invictus - In The West
Sopor Aeternus & The Ensemble of Shadows - The Goat

It is the kind of rainy day where you also kill yourself.

Simon & Garfunkel would make awesome rainy day musics.  I tend to sing "Kathy's Song" when it rains.
