I'm off to Trier in a few days time to visit a friend whilst I have a few days off before Christmas. Flying into Dusseldorf, then a bus to Cologne, a few hours there and then a train to Trier. It'll be a bit of a long trip but I'm looking forward to it. If it was in the UK I would be having panic attacks right now about even thinking of attempting such a journey via public transport. I have the upmost faith in German efficiency however.....

Not at all. We are actually getting a crash course in 19th century Russian history while we read the book, which adds another element.

For reference, this is what three hours of British public transport did to me this morning:
Have you ever got the first bus in the morning to a place you've never been before, and had to guess where to get off?
Then walk around in the dark looking for the tram station, wondering if you're going to be mugged?*
Then when you find the tram you are the only people on it, and then when you get off the tram, have to walk around for an hour before you can get on the train to finally get you within walking distance of home?
I think I am just about the best friend ever... I only did this because my friend needed to go to work in the morning. Even her boyfriend didn't want to do it.
*Stretford is not a nice place to be at any time. Ever.
