Don't confuse me! I'm drunk! In German, "Holland" and "Netherlands" are synonymous!

In dutch, they are soooo different.
We usually call the place "Nederland", which has 12 provinces, one of which is called North-Holland, and one South-Holland (we also have North-Brabant, but no south, cause them Belgians wanted that bit)
We only refer to the place as Holland when some national team is playing some sport, preferably football. But, i have the suspicion that that is because it just shouts better than Nederland.

Just to muddy the waters even further there's a district of Lincolnshire called Holland
