Guys, heat radiates, then rises. If you've got something close enough to the heat source it doesn't matter a jot whether it's above it or below it. The only limiting factor should be whether you're trying to heat the top or the bottom more. In the case of grilled cheese, I'd suggest that heating the cheese, on top, is of primary importance.
