Brazil Vs. 1984
« on: 03 Sep 2007, 02:24 »

I would add a vote thing, but I've suddenly become stupid and can't remember how, or if I can.
The question is which film (not book obviously) is better in your opinion, both tell stories of totalatarianism from the points of view of two civilians with 'dreams' and desires, but which one do you prefer?

For me, it will always and forever be Brazil, and should this thread blossom into a wonderful flower of conversation about the two films in question, I will bombard you all with pointless facts about the film Brazil.

Fact #1

- The film Brazil was completed and due for release in 1984, however the film '1984' came out that year, so they posponed the release of Brazil until 1985.

Haven't seen this 1984 film you speak of, but I'm sure Brazil is better. As a film. If it was going up against the book...nope. It's good, really good, but it's not that good.

Gattaca is really good, too, though not as good as Brazil.

Sometimes, quality really can be quantified.

There were two film versions of Nineteen Eighty-Four, one of which was released in the titular year.

And, bizarrely enough, soundtracked by Eurythmics.

1984 has a creep element that Brazil doesn't: the ministry of love.  I go for 1984.

And 12 monkeys is pretty dystopic in the whole controlled society thing.

Brazil is miles better than the frankly-fairly-average 1984 film which gets props mainly for the pitch-perfect casting of John Hurt.  'Course, Brazil is pretty darn incredible and even better than the novel in my opinion.

BRAZIL all the way, no question. 1984 was a crap film, poor production values and really fairly boring. Brazil's one of the great movie's, funny, frightening, exciting.

Fact 2#

Robert De Niro really wanted to play the part of Sam Lowri, but the part had been promised to Jonathan Pryce, Robert De Niro wanted to be in the film so badly that they had to pencil in Harry Tuttle for him.

I havn't seen Brazil but I think for the time the 1984 film was pretty good. I think it would be amazing if they made another, modern version.

Brazil is on my list of films to see since I quite like the whole dystopian genre and I havn't seen/read enough of it.

Hmmm, I read (or heard...is it mentioned in the documentary on the DVD?) that he wanted to play Jack Lint but that had already been promised to (and written for) Michael Palin.

Also, Brazil basically is another, modern version of 1984.  With added Samurai.  And tubes.  Lots of tubes.

Fact: Brazil is my mom's most hated movie.
"It was boring. All I remember is that it was ridiculous, stupid and had lots of pipes."
I think she was just bitter, she saw it when my dad took her on a date. He loved it, naturally.

Brazil is the better movie, hands down.

Q: Which film with totalarian themes stars Christian Bale?
A: Equilibrium

Therefore Equilibrium is the best film.

Brazil, because my uncle had a part in a Terry Gilliam movie.  And dark comedies on a subject are cooler than a serious movie on a subject.

Well, I loved Brazil. I thought it was wonderful.

A sad note, the horrible Super Mario Bros. movie visually reminded me of Brazil, so now I can no longer watch Brazil without remembering Super Mario Bros. This makes me incredibly depressed.

Patently Brazil.

Goddammit people, which version of 1984 are we talking about? As someone pointed out before, there are two. And they're very different.

Let's say the more recent one. Mostly because of the Eurhythmics soundtrack.

Pick a version of 1984. I prefer Brazil. Now choose the other one. Same answer.
