This is very true. They're a really great band to watch (a bit like Man Man although easier to really watch b/c the audience at Man Man shows is always insane) with an amazing amount of stage presence and tons of energy. They do a lot of really cool stuff, playing on all sorts of things, switching instruments mid-song and generally cavorting about in a way that is immensely entertaining. Personally I think they're wonderful live and not to be missed despite the mildly annoying nature of the crowds they tend to attract.

Plan A:

Wait until there's a critical mass of fence jumpers, and storm the fence en masse. This worked one year.

Plan B:

A friend of mine has a truck, and regularly does staging for festivals (not BDO, though). We're thinking about loading up the back with people and trying to get in through a loading bay.

Plan C:

Rumour has it there's a fabled sewer tunnel that leads into the Stadium. By dressing up as a woman, I'll seduce the Minister for Waste Desposal using my Feminine Wiles and slip Rohypnol into his appletini. While he's dreaming sweet dreams of cross-dressers in full-body sewerage worker rubber dry-suits, I'll then steal his keys, and obtain the blueprints for the Homebush Bay sewage network. Then, riding an inflatable pool toy, I'll float gently down the stream of human waste and emerge victorious from a grate. Despite the fact that I'll be encrusted with human waste and clutching a pool toy in the shape of a banana, given the average BDO punter, I'll fit right in, seamlessly blending in with the crowd.

I was up at midnight for the release. Server crashed. Kept trying. At 1:30 I gave up and went to bed, got up at 3am to try again. 3:30 I went to bed, got up at 6am to try again. Went back to bed and tried again at 7, then 7:30, then 8, then at about quarter to 9 when I got into work the website said they'd sold out of BDO.com tickets.

I was logged in to ticketek at 9am waiting for them to start selling. As soon as they were made available I hit search. 15 mins later they told me there were no tickets found.

I logged out of ticketmaster and into ebay.com.au to see BDO tickets already being put up for sale.

Fucking cunts.

ok so here I am thinking that gold coast never sells out so it will be ok to wakeup on the morning the tickets went on sale and purchase at ease.... WRONG!! The online tickets sold out in 15 minutes

thankfully though my best mate rang me from the huge line that stretched around the block waiting to get into Rockinghorse where they had tickets on sale ..... and being the angel that she is she waited 2 hours to get one for me (she even sent me a picture message to prove that she had them) So YAY I am going to Big Day Out

Also what is with all the Big Day Out haters? my best friend and i have a tradition of going every year and we always have loads of fun. You can make cliches about all the kind of people who go but at the end of the day everyone is there to enjoy the music and half the fun of big day out is seeing bands you wouldn't usually see or have even heard of and end up loving them .... My best friend and I always find that each year eclipses the last and we don't even drink or dabble on substances and yet it is still the one day of the year that we both look forward to in anticipation. Sure not everyone is there to see the same kind of music but at the end of the day it is all about the music so lighten up guys and just enjoy it for what it is

the occasional decent Splendour in the Grass/Falls Festival lineups aside, this is pretty much the best lineup any festival in Australia is ever going to get.

i don't know if i'm alone in this train of thought, but i was under the impression that australia is actually a pretty great place. we get heaps more great bands than lots of places i can think of, and alot of the international musos i've spoken to really enjoy the place! not to get too patriotic about it, but aus is actually cultivating some wicked music of its own. the cultural cringe strikes again.

i'm helping out with sound at 2008 bdo, and have been a punter a few times before...however many negative aspects of the festival there are, like bogans with watermelon helmets (man they stink in 42 degree weather), ladies with police uniforms and/or angel wings, metallica fuckwits grabbing the butt of a 15 year old (me), they do provide an all ages place for people to see world class bands where they otherwise may not have been able to. i saw john cooper clarke at last year's and he was great, i didn't even know he was booked to perform. and at the end of the day it'll set you back a little over $100. for some people that's so more than worth it!

I am very excited for Arcade Fire, Spoon and Bjork.
Thing with the big day out is you know it'll be stupidly hot and you'll get a terrible sunburn and bruised toenails, but you still have to go.
Also, hey CamusCanDo! You are from NZ, and so am I! This makes us both pretty cool. And Violentdove, you would pretty much be my hero if you could pull off plan C.

I don't think it's really about whether moshpits are fun or not. They just sort of seem to form at large outdoor venues, they're unavoidable. Personally, I think they form as a way of avoiding eye contact with the people crammed in on all sides around you, because that shit can be awkward.
