Okay, I am sure most of you have already heard of this abomination already. Inspired by Something Awful's article (and because I am bored at work) I decided to look up these kids' bios. This was a bad idea as now my mind is confused and my soul is weeping. Here, for your benefit, are some of my "favorites":

I think it looks interesting... but it may turn to be an utter failure, really. I mean they are kids, they don't fully understand the complications of government and running a "nation". I mean, I'm 19 and have taken every history and Gov. class possible and I still have a hard time understanding it sometimes.

And saying that it's "no adults" isn't really true. The show's host is an adult, and seems to be there often, as well as I am sure that the camera crew etc. is adult. They aren't letting the kids get hurt, and are providing them with a structure.

Throw 40 kids in a desert for 40 days w/ a few dozen hidden cameras and make them start from the ground up. Now that would be (albiet, highly irresponsible of course) an interesting show! Hell, throw 40 adults in the desert and make them start from the ground up and it would be an interesting show.

i dunno though. political science is like a deconstruction of what people have made after the fact of history. people who developed different kinds of societies weren't necessarily conscientiously doing it while thinking, "gee, what are the principles of governments?" they just figured out what works. i'd imagine these kids will figure it out in the same way. even if they don't initially understand the complexities of a government and running a society, they'll have tangible consequences real quick. they get something working or they lose.

I don't think you need much education to understand the difference between right and wrong and how to lead or follow. People will do what people do, be it a kid or not. I have a feeling the older kids will try to take over, just because of age, or the smarter ones will, because of their brains, and the rest will follow the others. Or maybe whoever knows how to cook.

I see this whole thing a rip off of both Lord of the Flies and Survivor and am not really interested in the results. (I think the whole reality TV thing has exhausted itself already.)

I found the Che of this group, and my personal favorite.

Because obviously what one does at the end of an 8 year presidency determines whether you suck or not. Especially if it's to do with your personal life. So if W does something completely awesome next year, we can completely forgive him for being a moron! Wow!

(Yeah, that's crap. It seems most of these kids grew up with Republican or more conservative parents, considering when I was that age, I had no real opinion on politics. Other than the Clinton/Gore rally I went to with my mom when I was around 6 or 7.)

So all the lessons on right and wrong you got from your parents, school, and church were pointless?

People may not need formal education wrt morals and ethics, but people have been attempting to instill codes of behaviour into our children ever since we were swinging from trees. Every society has some form of hierarchy and how to behave within it is a key part of raising young. Saw an ad for this show and I thought - "No flippin' way am I watching this!"

About the only good things on TV anyway is Mythbusters, and Battlestar Galactica (maybe some Law and Order reruns or older CSI)

I for one, have not attended a single church service in my life, but I can tell you I've got a better sense of right and wrong.

Most people who aren't emotional cripples can form their own basis of moral integrity. Various influences can bring you one way or another, but on one's own, it generally defaults to a pretty sound moral compass. If one absolutely needed someone else to tell them what is right and wrong, we'd have a significantly different society, if society ever managed to develop to begin with.

i watched this show the other night. they divide the kids up into age groups and have them compete against each other for social status. the older kids are the upper class. the second oldest are the merchant class. the youngest kids are the cooks. the ones above them are the laboring class. they have the 8 year olds cooking for them all. insanity! and now they are all driven to perform better and help the society more so that the council members (one kid from each age group) will give them a gold star worth $20,000. greg is a douche. a lot of the kids are whiny. some of them are tolerable, but not enough to make up for the others. basically, i want to vomit all over this show.

They weren't initially divided into the groups by age, but the council were supposed to choose their own groups - and the youngest kids ended up in mostly one group because the youngest council member didn't feel like being the "leader" for a bunch of older kids - and she's a whiny pageant-girl, so I guess that was a good call, seeing as she probably wouldn't last long if trying to lead, say, Greg. And they tried to keep friends in the same groups, so some groups have more older kids than others. And they have a chance to "switch" social status every show, it seems, but because of the way the made the groups, it'll probably not vary a lot anyways.

But yeah, it's a weird show.

This show is getting more and more..silly. It's like the kids are making a new city, but from a kit or something. And part of that kit is this stupid "pioneer journal" or whatever they were calling it, which the "council" seem to follow blindly, either because they have to or because they're just not that bright. Also, the whole social status-thingy, where they were told they had to be split into four "castes", almost, where the upper class gets 1 dollar for not doing anything at all, while the laborers get 10 cents for doing all the dirty work, is stupid. I'd like to think that if they'd gotten to decide for themselves, there would be a much more fair system, and people might be generally less pissed off and annoyed, which would make their chances of succeeding in "building a new world" a lot better. Blah.

Also, I read somewhere that the adult-child ratio there was like 6:1 or something.
