Day by day list of how much time has passed in QC
norcekri:
So, we expect Jeph to be more accurate than a stable of DC writers? I'm glad he's spending the time on developing the characters and mailing T-shirts instead of keeping a continuity spreadsheet: that's what fans (and Hannelore) are for.
Thanks for the list -- now that I've caught up on the archives, I was wondering exactly this, and was considering doing the job myself. I'd wondered quite a bit about the passage of time. I can buy the Faye-Marten interaction time. Remember, they knew each other before she moved in: he was a somewhat known quantity at CoD from day 1. Also, remember that Jeph is writing from his own sense of plot timing, which is moving forward in real time just as fast as ours. You can cram only so much into 4 panels each day, and there's an art to striking the right balance between the real world's need for development and in machina time. Note the passage of time in some of the syndicated strips, such as Apartment 3-G (the "G" stands for "Glacial"), Judge Parker, Mark Trail, and the like. Even the light-hearted ones, such as "Luann", move quite slowly ... but you'll notice that the kids still start and finish school at the same time as the rest of the northern hemisphere.
It's part of the industry, gang. Have fun tracking it, but don't expect Jeph to resolve all discrepancies. Some of them might strike his fancy, but the rest will simply fade into the background glow.
My personal trackin g"jones" is to see who gets the longest time lag between first appearance and getting a name (both in number of appearances and in number of strips) ... and then getting a full name. For instance, did you catch Dr. Corrine's last name? When does Steve get one? Do all the parents get first names some day? Did Penelope's last name appear in the strip, or only on the cast page?
I'm not requesting answers, although I'll bet there's someone out there who's already closed this task, too. I'll be happy to look for replies to these. For anyone who takes this as more than fun, all I have to say is:
NPR tote bag! NPR TOTE BAG!!!
