Call of Duty 4
Ozymandias:
Yeah, developing for PC is kind of a bum deal these days. You can charge more and be much more guaranteed to be paid on a console.
Czechfury:
It's a shame developers aren't getting rewarded for their hard work, and speaking as someone who doesn't own any console, a pity that PC games aren't receiving the support they deserve. It seems like valve has made things more difficult for people to pirate their games with Steam, but it's still possible I've heard.
Reading over my first post it doesn't come off nearly as tongue-in-cheek as I had intended it to be, my apologies if that caused confusion and for you to think of me as a thieving douchebag...haha (I did actually buy my copy of the game)
Anyway, back on the subject of COD4,
Ozymandias, I read your post about the UAV perk and silenced pistol a few days ago and decided to try it out for myself with a silenced M4. Picking people off without fear of ever showing up as a red dot on their map was extremely satisfying haha
Dimmukane:
I was only kidding anyways. The developers get paid to make the game, but if people pirate it, they won't get paid (or get paid as much) to improve on it and/or do sequels. And in some cases, they don't get paid until after the game comes out/sells well/period. (Herve Caen, I'm looking at you). But it's been a while since anyone tried that. Really, it's the publishers who don't get paid.
Storm Rider:
Well, developers certainly get royalties from the sales of a game, but yeah, it's mostly about job security. With game budgets rising like crazy, nobody really wants to risk publishing a game from a studio that doesn't have a track record of success unless the studio has self-funded the early development enough to the point where the publisher can tell it's going to shape up well or it's a budget/casual title.
Dimmukane:
I'm reviving this one briefly because the new maps came out yesterday morning. It took me about 45 minutes of spamming the A button to buy the points necessary to download them, and another 10 minutes of spamming for that to work. So I was kinda pissed. But once I started actually playing them, I forgot about it. Here's the rundown (in the order of least to most liked, but they're all pretty rad):
Chinatown:
Carentan remake (from Call of Duty 2). Makes for some ridiculously hectic objective games. As someone in my clan pointed out, Point B in domination has no less than 7 exits to guard. And we finally have a night-time map!
Broadcast:
Taken from the first American level in the campaign, there's a big broadcast station a long with a large parking lot with a few buildings in the back. We played Sabotage on this map, and it ended in Sudden Death. There are some pretty cool changes to the building structure from the campaign version, like what seems to be an editing room with a hole in the ceiling that was put there on purpose. Entire rounds can be played without going out of a 20-foot radius of the main building.
Creek:
BIG map. Has a waterfall. And a tunnel taking you from point A to point C. And some cliff walkways. It's fucking awesome. A lot of people try to be snipers and hang out on the big hill in the middle, but it's more fun to move around and stuff.
Killhouse:
Most fun I've ever had in a Call of Duty 4 map. I threw a grenade, died, spawned on the other side of the map, and got killed by my own grenade. AWESOME. It's slightly larger than Shipment, but objective games aren't determined by whoever holds the middle point, because there is no middle point. Playing Oldschool on this (with ragdoll and everything) results in some hilarious body-flying action.
