Bjork did make an album (Medulla) which was comprised almost entirely of vocals. She worked a lot with Rahzel, and did a track or two with Mike Patton. They both added layers to the songs, but Rahzel more did a lot of the beat (boxing) on it and other sounds to make the songs. Conceptually it was such a great idea.

I think the problem with lyricists tends to be that so many topics can come off as trite. One of my favorite lyric writers and song makers is Devendra Banhart. His songs are well crafted and his lyrics often tell stories in abstract and visual ways. Just opinions tho.

In fact, as far as I know it's me and a few of my family members. Don't get me wrong, I do enjoy the messages behind the lyrics, I just listen to singers as another instrument rather than someone saying words, if that makes sense at all. Anyway it seems the majority cares for lyrics when they listen to music, are there any others of us out there? If so what sorts of music do you enjoy?

Edit: Except for Streetlight Manifesto lyrics, but I listen to those for the sake of memorizing them. Ska is fun to blare and sing along with driving at 60mph.

i agree with johnny c to a point

im  old fasioned in this respect that i like lyrics in songs
but its a joy to here a good instrumental
Pink floyd songs for example are a good combo of both

though if you choose to believe rob Paravonian then disregard most lyrics (esp sugar ray)
here's rob talking about it

I find it difficult to believe you weren't already aware of this.

I don't really have a consistent system for lyrics. Some people I'm willing to ignore the lyrics - the pop music I listen to, for example, Ashlee Simpson and the like, or for the most part N.W.A. who with some notable exceptions have generic gangsta rap lyrics (even if they were one of the earliest groups to) - some people they're just so bad that I just can't listen to them when the lyrics are that bad. Gallows are a bizarre one in that because they're hardcore punk, I'd not be able to sing along anyway and so it doesn't matter how fucking awful Frank Carter's lyrics are when I'm listening to it, as long as I don't read them. Doesn't stop me ranting about them though.

Patrick:
I agree with Gaz here. N.W.A.'s lyrics are SHIT. Doesn't stop them from being awesome.

One thing I keep worrying about when I write my own lyrics is the fact that they're TOTAL SHIT but now that I'm reminded of all of this I feel a lot better, because it means I'm in the same league as N.W. FUCKING A.
