I think people who play real instruments are at a disadvantage when they try to play Guitar Hero/Rock Band. Because you can't handle the controller like a real guitar, it's based on matching colors instead of hearing sounds, and basically I find it boring compared to actually playing the guitar/bass. Except for the drums, I heard the drumming is pretty similar to playing a set of real electronic drums, and that if you can master the Rock Band tracks, you'd be good enough to play with the actual band itself. (I've never played Rock Band but I have played Guitar Hero, guitar and bass player here.)

Anyway when it comes to rhythm games it is ALL about Mad Maestro.

0bsessions:
That's completely untrue outside of Guitar Hero 3. The problem I had with Guitar Hero 3 was that it lacked any real rhythm for a rhythm game.

I play guitar and that helped me pick up Guitar Hero (In its early stages) rather easily because I had a developed sense of rhythm. I mean, yeah, don't be expecting to pick up the game and master anything on hard, but actual guitar players or any musicians, really, are at an advantage, not a disadvantage.

Chesire Cat:
Yeah the best dude I know at Guitar Hero plays guitar in a metal band, hes got excellent finger picking and up-down strumming techniques that he would not otherwise have.

dennis:
The real problem with transitioning to real instruments from rhythm game instruments is that when you play a real instrument, the sheet music doesn't scroll past your eyes on a screen.
