So here is my experience with Rock Band.
I played demos in 3 different stores and every one, (despite me re-calibrating them from the menu) was off by half a beat.
I then played it at a friends house after release.
The vocals are too linear and don't allow you to add anything in there.
The guitar feels HORRIBLE I tried the original guitar with it for a while before I just plugged in a Guitar Hero controller.
Not to mention the poorly made drums and guitars that I have seen being sent back for replacements on a fairly regular basis.
I love the team that made this game but I think they rushed it a little too much.
Great song list
Great Idea.
Maybe 2 will be worth the $170 price tag.
Going back to my GH3 now.. The foo fighters pack makes me happy.

I thought the timing was off a bit, but if you put the vocals on Easy, they allow a bit of space for you to go up or down.

Man Guitar Hero III is pretty awful. I am sorry to say but I actually really hate it.
Equipment-wise, you're right in that the first run of equipment had a pretty hard failure rate. The guitar feels natural and a bit more like an actual guitar, though, and the vocals are about the same in that respect as any karaoke game. They're still pretty fun though - see: "Sabotage."
Ozymandias:
I cannot possibly go back to GH3. God, that is a terrible game now that I've played Rock Band. Unambitious and just....off.
The new guitar I've gotten used to. It's way easier to strum. The drums I just suck at, but my drummer enjoys them. The singing is...uh, I don't know what else you'd expect. It's actually really fun to improvise, actually. The only complaint I have in the radio-friendly editing, but it's a sacrifice I am willing to make.
I just downloaded Interstate Love Song, Wonderwall, and War Pigs. All of them I heck of enjoy on guitar.
